罪人回头特恩
Good God! what takes place in man, that he should more rejoice at the salvation of a soul despaired of, and freed from greater peril, than if there had always been hope of him, or the danger had been less? For so Thou also, merciful Father, dost more rejoice over one penitent than over ninety-nine just persons that need no repentance. And with much joyfulness do we hear, so often as we hear with what joy the sheep which had strayed is brought back upon the shepherd's shoulder, and the groat is restored to Thy treasury, the neighbours rejoicing with the woman who found it; and the joy of the solemn service of Thy house forceth to tears, when in Thy house it is read of Thy younger son, that he was dead, and liveth again; had been lost, and is found. For Thou rejoicest in us, and in Thy holy angels, holy through holy charity. For Thou art ever the same; for all things which abide not the same nor forever, Thou forever knowest in the same way.
好上帝啊!人们对于一个绝望的灵魂从重大的危险中获得救援,比始终有得救的希望或遭遇寻常危险的灵魂,更觉得快乐,这种心情从何而来的呢?你,慈悲的父亲,你也“对于一个罪人悔改,比九十九个不用悔改的义人更欢喜。”[11]我们怀着极大的喜悦,听得牧人找到迷途的羊,欢欢喜喜的扛在肩上而归,和妇人在四邻相庆中把找到的一块钱送回你的银库中。读到你家中的幼子“死而复生,失而复得”,我们也为之喜极而涕,来参加你家庭的大庆。这是你在我们心中,在具有圣爱的神圣天使心中所享的快乐,因为你是始终不变的,你永永不变地注视着一切有起有讫、变化不定的事物。
What then takes place in the soul, when it is more delighted at finding or recovering the things it loves, than if it had ever had them? Yea, and other things witness hereunto; and all things are full of witnesses, crying out, "So is it." The conquering commander triumpheth; yet had he not conquered unless he had fought; and the more peril there was in the battle, so much the more joy is there in the triumph. The storm tosses the sailors, threatens shipwreck; all wax pale at approaching death; sky and sea are calmed, and they are exceeding joyed, as having been exceeding afraid. A friend is sick, and his pulse threatens danger; all who long for his recovery are sick in mind with him. He is restored, though as yet he walks not with his former strength; yet there is such joy, as was not, when before he walked sound and strong. Yea, the very pleasures of human life men acquire by difficulties, not those only which fall upon us unlooked for, and against our wills, but even by self-chosen, and pleasure-seeking trouble. Eating and drinking have no pleasure, unless there precede the pinching of hunger and thirst. Men, given to drink, eat certain salt meats, to procure a troublesome heat, which the drink allaying, causes pleasure. It is also ordered that the affianced bride should not at once be given, lest as a husband he should hold cheap whom, as betrothed, he sighed not after.
人们对于所爱的东西失而复得,比一直拥有感到更大的快乐,这种心情究竟从何而来的呢?许多事例证明这一点,一切都提出证据,叫喊说:“的确如此”。战胜的元首举行凯旋礼,如果不战,不会胜利;战争中危险愈大,则凯旋时快乐也愈甚。航海者受风浪的簸弄,受复舟的威胁,都胆战心惊等待与波臣为伍,忽然风浪平息,过去的恐怖换取了这时欣慰。一个亲爱的人害病,脉息显示他病势严重,希望他转好的人们,心中是和他一起害病。等到病势减极,虽然元气尚未恢复,还不能行走,但人们所感到的愉快绝不是他未曾患病、健步行走时所能感觉的。人生愉快的心情,不仅来自突然的、出乎意外的遭遇,也来自预定的、自寻的烦恼。一人不先感到饥渴,便享受不到饮食的乐趣。酒鬼先吃些咸涩的东西,引起舌根的不快,然后饮酒时酣畅地消除这种苦味。习惯规定订婚后不立即结婚,使未婚夫经过一个时期的想望,成婚后对妻子更加爱护。
This law holds in foul and accursed joy; this in permitted and lawful joy; this in the very purest perfection of friendship; this, in him who was dead, and lived again; had been lost and was found. Every where the greater joy is ushered in by the greater pain. 
对于可耻的、卑鄙的乐趣是如此;对于许可的、合法的快乐是如此;对于最真诚的、正当的友谊也是如此;甚至对于儿子的“死而复生、失而复得”也不例外;无论哪种情况,事前忧患愈重,则所得快乐也愈大。
What means this, O Lord my God, where as Thou art everlastingly joy to Thyself, and some things around Thee ever more rejoice in Thee? What means this, that this portion of things thus ebbs and flows alternately displeased and reconciled? Is this their allotted measure? Is this all Thou hast assigned to them, where as from the highest heavens to the lowest earth, from the beginning of the world to the end of ages, from the angel to the worm, from the first motion to the last, Thou settest each in its place, and realisest each in their season, everything good after its kind? Woe is me! how high art Thou in the highest, and how deep in the deepest! and Thou never departest, and we scarcely return to Thee.
主,我的上帝,这究竟是怎么回事?你为你自己是永恒的快乐,而在你周围的受造物也以你为快乐。但为何自然界的一部分有消长逆顺的不同?是否上及九天,下至九渊,前乎邃古之初,后至世纪之末,天使之尊,虫蚁之贱,自第一运动至最后运动,你安排着各类的美好以及一切合理的工程,使之各得其所,各得其时,事物必然有此情况?的确如此,你真是高于九天,深于九渊!你从不离开我们,可是我们要回到你身边是多么困难!
Up, Lord, and do; stir us up, and recall us; kindle and draw us; inflame, grow sweet unto us, let us now love, let us run. Do not many, out of a deeper hell of blindness than Victorinus, return to Thee, approach, and are enlightened, receiving that Light, which they who receive, receive power from Thee to become Thy sons? But if they be less known to the nations, even they that know them, joy less for them. For when many joy together, each also has more exuberant joy for that they are kindled and inflamed one by the other. Again, because those known to many, influence the more towards salvation, and lead the way with many to follow. And therefore do they also who preceded them much rejoice in them, because they rejoice not in them alone. 
主,请你提醒我们,呼唤我们,熏炙我们,吸引我们,融化我们,使我们心悦诚服,使我怀着炽热的心情向你追踪。不是有许多人从更深于维克托利努斯的昏昧黑暗中回到你身边吗?他们靠近你,便获得光明,受到照耀;获得了光明,也就获得了成为你的子女的权利。这些人的事迹不如维克托利努斯为大众所熟悉,知道的人也不如那样高兴。因为大家欢喜,于是大家也更加高兴,相互之间能发出欢快的热情。所以声名赫奕的人能挈带人们趋受得救的恩宠;他们是先觉,别人自会效其所为。为此,比他们更先进的人,当然也感到极大的兴奋,因为他们的快乐并非仅仅为了少数有名望的人。
For far be it, that in Thy tabernacle the persons of the rich should be accepted before the poor, or the noble before the ignoble; seeing rather Thou hast chosen the weak things of the world to confound the strong; and the base things of this world, and the things despised hast Thou chosen, and those things which are not, that Thou mightest bring to nought things that are. And yet even that least of Thy apostles, by whose tongue Thou soundedst forth these words, when through his warfare, Paulus the Proconsul, his pride conquered, was made to pass under the easy yoke of Thy Christ, and became a provincial of the great King; he also for his former name Saul, was pleased to be called Paul, in testimony of so great a victory. For the enemy is more overcome in one, of whom he hath more hold; by whom he hath hold of more. But the proud he hath more hold of, through their nobility; and by them, of more through their authority. By how much the more welcome then the heart of Victorinus was esteemed, which the devil had held as an impregnable possession, the tongue of Victorinus, with which mighty and keen weapon he had slain many; so much the more abundantly ought Thy sons to rejoice, for that our King hath bound the strong man, and they saw his vessels taken from him and cleansed, and made meet for Thy honour; and become serviceable for the Lord, unto every good work.
在你的居处,绝对没有贫富贵贱的畛域。你反而“拣选了世上的弱者,使那些强有力者自感羞愧,拣选了世上的贱者和世俗所认为微不足道而视若无物者,使有名无实者归于乌有”。[12]但使徒中最小的一位,你通过他的喉舌发出上面这些话的,他战胜了总督保罗的骄傲,使之接受你的基督的轻轭,降为天地大君的庶民;他为了纪念这一伟大卓越的胜利,愿意把自己的原名扫罗改为保罗[13]。譬如敌人对某一人控制得越厉害,而且利用这人进而控制更多的人,则敌人在这人身上遭到的失败也越严重。先生们,由于他们的声望,更是受敌人控制的目标,敌人正可利用他们控制更多的人。你的孩子们想到维克托利努斯的心过去如何为魔鬼所掌握,视为不可攻克的堡垒,魔鬼利用他的口舌作为锐利的强弩,射死了多少人,而现在目睹我们的君王捆缚了这个力士,把他的器械收缴,洗炼之后,成为“合乎主用,准备盛置各种善事”[14]的宝器,不是更该手舞足蹈吗?
