I began then diligently to practise that for which I came to Rome, to teach rhetoric; and first, to gather some to my house, to whom, and through whom, I had begun to be known; when lo, I found other offences committed in Rome, to which I was not exposed in Africa. True, those "subvertings" by profligate young men were not here practised, as was told me: but on a sudden, said they, to avoid paying their master's stipend, a number of youths plot together, and remove to another; -breakers of faith, who for love of money hold justice cheap.
我开始在罗马从事于教授雄辩术的工作，这是我所以来此的目的。我先在家中招收一些学生，由于他们的宣传，外界开始对我注意了。我听到罗马有一种不见于非洲的情况。别人告诉我非洲那些败坏青年的捣乱行为这里的确没有，但“为了赖学费，许多学生串通好，会突然转到另一个教师那里，钱财重于信义，以致不惜违反公道”。
These also my heart hated, though not with a perfect hatred: for perchance I hated them more because I was to suffer by them, than because they did things utterly unlawful.
我便也憎恶他们这种行径，但不能说是出于一种正当的憎恨，因为我之所以怀恨他们，与其说是为了他们损害别人的非法行为，不如说是为了直接加于我的损失。
Of a truth such are base persons, and they go a whoring from Thee, loving these fleeting mockeries of things temporal, and filthy lucre, which fouls the hand that grasps it; hugging the fleeting world, and despising Thee, Who abidest, and recallest, and forgivest the adulteress soul of man, when she returns to Thee. And now I hate such depraved and crooked persons, though I love them if corrigible, so as to prefer to money the learning which they acquire, and to learning, Thee, O God, the truth and fulness of assured good, and most pure peace. But then I rather for my own sake misliked them evil, than liked and wished them good for Thine.
这种人哪里还有人格，他们“远离你而犯奸淫”[26]，流连于时间所玩弄的浮影，贪嗜着沾污他们双手的粪土般的利益，拥抱着这个消逝的世界，却蔑视永久存在的你，正在呼唤并宽恕一切失身于邪恶而能迷途知返者的你。现在我一面是憎恨这种人的败坏无耻，一面却爱他们，希望能纠正他们，使他们能爱所钻研的学问过于金钱，爱你真理的天主，更爱真正幸福的泉源与纯洁的和平过于学问。但那时我只为自身打算，不愿忍受他们的恶劣行为，不能为你打算，希望他们改过迁善。
