David Qiao and Tiffany Li interviewed Jennifer Rice, Edmonton's first Chinese city councilor in the city's 100-year history. They were encouraged and recognized for their commitment to serving the community.  The following passage is a transcript of the interview.
Earlier this year, Global Youth Philanthropy recruited its first group of journalists – middle school and high school students from North America and China. Our chapter opens with extensive training with individuals from the media industry and college students and instructors where they developed important skills in journalism, communication, and writing.  Through our public platform, our dispatched journalists then go on to invite notable individuals in different fields and backgrounds and engage in in-depth interviews with them, where they learn, share, and amplify the different life stories and experiences from all walks of life  We are extremely excited that our young reporter will have such opportunities to grow and exercise their skillsets, and we look forward to hearing more about what they have to say!
On March 11, 2022, David Qiao and Tiffany Li, young journalists from Youth Global Philanthropy, walked into Edmonton city hall with both excitement and anxiousness in preparation of interviewing city councilor Rice.
The two youth journalists were making the final preparation before the interview.
In October 2021, a Chinese Canadian was elected as a city councilor of  Edmonton, Canada, no one among the Chinese generation has ever taken this role in the past 117 years. The name of this representative of the Chinese community is Jennifer Rice and her Chinese name is Feng Chun. According to western culture, She changed her name to Jennifer Rice after marriage. Jennifer Rice is always enthusiastic about public welfare and community service for decades and was successfully elected as a city councilor by voting. As such, she has rewritten history and has become the ambassador of her Chinese heritage and her community.

INTERVIEW WITH JENNIFER RICE:

Q: What or who inspired you to get into politics?
A: “Actually it was our Chinese community youths. One of the major reasons I ran for city councilor was the fact that I like to use my campaign to inspire our committee's future leaders. That's the reason I say over and over, and tell people I would like to see more youths come to join me and to understand this multicultural system, how we can contribute to our community, and make Edmonton a better place”.
Q: What were some significant experiences that you had campaigning?
A: “
I think for my campaign, there were so many, so many heart-touching points and moments I experienced during my campaign. I received so much support and help from our Chinese community, many people joined me through this journey. The most heart-touching thing was seeing how you can see your own voice to influence other people's lives. Many moments my youth leadership team went out with me and then their passion, their dedication, and their hard work were so wholesome to watch.”

Q: How can you benefit people's lives as a city councilor?
A: “
By listening to what everyone has to say and appealing to the majority,I can help improve their quality of life.”

Q: What challenges did you go through to get to your position as a city councilor?
A: “I think a big challenge is to increase public awareness and how we can use our own strengths and our own thinking to make a change in this world.  Another challenge I saw, due to the fact I am a first-generation immigrant, is that the culture is so different.  The process of the community seeing what I want to do, what I can do, can take a very long time”.
Tiffany interviewed in Chinese
Q: What were some challenges you faced as a person of color in western society?
A: “To be honest, I didn't feel like there were a lot of challenges due to the color of my skin, I believe the foundation Edmonton was built on is inclusion. Everybody seems very respectful. During my campaign, I didn't feel like they wouldn't vote for me because I'm Chinese-Canadian. I didn't feel that way, I think people actually open their hearts, open their arms to learn about you as long as you have a passion to benefit our community.”

Q: How has Covid-19 affected your job as a city councilor?
A: “Covid-19 affected everybody, as a councilor due to covid-19 we had to do virtual work, we had to attend meetings on the internet and that impacted the number of interactions in person, therefore, damaging the time we have to interact with the people. I am so glad to say that Covid-19 is closing to the end, we finally have an opportunity to return to a normal life, I think that's what the majority of our Edmontonians are looking for.”
David interviewed in English
Q: Do you have any advice for the youths that are trying to get more involved with politics?
A:
I'm so glad to say, so many youths are demonstrating the urge to get more involved within politics. To me, politics is a life journey and for you to make a positive change to the community. If you would like to pursue a career in politics, you should contribute your time and strengths to help people who need help and help communities that need help.

Q: What is your opinion on the current global political situation from someone in Edmonton?
A: “I think if we look at the global situation as a public figure I do believe that a peaceful environment is a big goal for everybody. I believe building a peaceful environment is a key fundamental factor for our people to have a better life, and I will promote peace everywhere, in our cities in our country because people need that peaceful community to have a better life, a better job to make progress.”
