第50期：In Hot Water
应大家的需求，常爸团队最近又要做新的英语课程，需要请一个新的兼职外教，就向Mike询问他的表弟。
常爸
Mike, how is your cousin recently? Is he still in China?（迈克，你的表弟最近还好吗？他还在中国吗？）
Mike
No, he is in America now. I think my cousin might be in hot water.（没有，他在美国。我想他现在可能“在热水里”。）
常爸
Oh, no. Why?（不会吧。怎么了？）
Mike
I heard he borrowed a lot of money to pay for the start-up, but he failed.（我听说他借了一大笔钱创业，但是没成功。）
小小常
Who is in hot water? Is he taking a bath?（谁在热水里呀？他是在泡澡吗？）
Mike
No one, Victor. “In hot water” just means that someone might be in trouble.（没人在热水里。“In hot water”意思是某人可能遇到了麻烦。）
小小常
Oh, I see! Like I would be in hot water if my mom finds I don't go to sleep in time.（我知道啦！就像如果我妈妈发现我没按时睡觉，我就有麻烦了。）
“hot water”大家都很熟悉——热水。
在“女同胞最讨厌的男性十大回复”中，位居榜首的就是“多喝热水”。
“头疼脑热，多喝热水；感冒发烧，多喝热水，例假胃痛，多喝热水”；仿佛“热水”是专治各种疑难杂症的灵丹妙药。
但我们今天讲的“hot water”并不是直接饮用的热水，毕竟在西方文化里，人们没有喝热水的习惯，他们更习惯喝冰水。“hot water”也多指刚煮开的滚烫的水、开水，可以用来泡茶、冲咖啡而已。
据说在几个世纪前，如果遇到有人闯入家里，女主人就会用滚烫的热水把他赶出来。一旦被热水烫到，当然就会有麻烦啦。
根据韦氏词典，“hot water”表示一种艰难或者危险的处境，类似于trouble。如果某人遇到非常麻烦的问题，处于困境，就是“in hot water”，用我们中文来说，就是类似“水深火热中”。
例如，感情亮起红灯时：
Joe is really in hot water now, his girlfriend just found out he's seeing another woman.
乔伊现在麻烦大了，他女朋友刚发现他在和别的女人约会。
坏事被揭穿时：
That movie actor tried to cheat on his income tax, but he got caught and now he's in hot water with the government.
那个电影演员企图偷税漏税，但是被税务部门发现了。现在他有麻烦了。
生意处于困境时：
The business was easy at first, but we are in hot water now.
起初生意还挺好做，但现在我们遇到麻烦了。
作品陷入争议时：
The author has previously been in hot water for alleged racism.
之前这个作者被指作品涉嫌种族歧视，作者深陷其扰。
总之，不管是工作、家庭还是金钱方面的困境，都可以使用“in hot water”。
另外，与“water”相关的表达还有这些：
✍in deep water
deep water意同hot water，也表示困境。In deep water同样表示陷入困境。
Having had a quarrel with his boss, Mr. Lee has been in deep water.
与老板吵架后，李先生处境水深火热。
✍in low water
直译表示“低水位”，其实表示拮据、缺钱。
With employment difficulty, demobilized soldiers have been ranked among weak colonies of our society and some of retired officers live in low water.
由于就业困难，复员军人一直是社会的弱势群体，部分退役军官生活拮据。
✍in smooth water
smooth表示光滑的、顺滑的。smooth water表示顺流，in smooth water即“处于顺境中”。
The business seems to be in smooth water these days.
这些日子生意似乎很顺利。
