第64期：Find One's Feet 适应新环境
小小常刚开始上小学，他一直为加入一个新班级这件事感到兴奋。这天他看到Mike忍不住又聊到这件事：
小小常
Hello, Mike! I'm in a new class now!（你好，迈克！我现在在一个新的班级了！）
Mike
That's great! How is it going, Victor?（太棒了！那你感觉怎么样，小小常？）
小小常
I like my new classmates, but I don't know all of them!（我喜欢我的新同学，但我还不认识他们所有人呢！）
Mike
That's alright. You will soon find your feet!（那没关系。你很快就会find your feet的！）
小小常
Find my feet? I know where my feet are!（Find my feet? 可是我知道我的脚在哪里啊！）
Mike
Ha ha, no, Victor! "Find your feet" means to get comfortable in a new place! When you get used to your new class, you will love it!（“Find you feet”是适应新环境的意思！你适应了新的班级之后，你就会爱上它！）
常爸
Exactly! People need some time to find their feet.（没错，人都需要时间来适应环境。）
小小常
You are right! I know that I will have lots of new friends soon!（你说得对！我很快就会交很多朋友的！）
从字面上看，Find your feet意思是“找到你的脚”，但其实和“脚”关系不大。参考韦氏词典，它表示“适应新环境，在新环境中感到舒适”。
当人们进入一个新的环境时，经常会用到这个短语。比如：
✍升入新学校：
My daughter started secondary school two weeks ago, but she's already found her feet.
She's made loads of new friends and really likes her teachers.
两周前，我女儿刚刚升入中学，不过现在她已经适应新环境了。
她交了很多新朋友，也很喜欢她的老师。

✍开始新工作：
I know you're nervous, but all new colleagues are just like you.
Don't worry. You'll find your feet in the company soon.
我知道你很紧张，但所有的新同事都和你一样。
别担心。你很快就会适应公司的生活。
✍加入新团队：
Since the latter half of the last season,
he started to find his feet at the club and started putting in some good performances.
从上个赛季的后半段开始，
他就逐渐适应了俱乐部的生活，并努力地训练以证明自己。
✍移民到新国家：
After moving to America from Japan ,
it took me a long time to find my feet.
从日本搬到美国后，
我花了很长时间才适应。
关于“find your feet”这个短语的来源，并没有明确的出处。有一种说法是，它源于动物界。面对残酷的自然法则，即使是刚刚降生的“新生儿”也不得不一落地就学会用双脚站立——find its feet，这样在遇到危险时才能躲避追捕。
由此用“find one's feet”来表示适应新环境。虽然不知真假，但听起来还真有那么几分意思呢。
在英语中，除了find your feet, 还有几组与“脚”有关的有趣短语，我们一起来看看吧。
☞get cold feet 临时上场，感到胆怯
cold是形容词，寒冷的，feet是双脚。但cold feet并不是寒冷的双脚，而是指“临时上场感到胆怯”。用来形容事到临头就变得没有勇气了。例如：
He has a toothache these days, but he gets cold feet to go to the hospital.
他这几天牙痛，但又不敢去医院。
☞bring (one) to one's feet 欢呼，喝彩
意思是“让某人站起来”，实际表示（让某人站起来）欢呼喝彩。例如：
His performance tonight brought all the audience to their feet.
他今晚的表演让全场观众都为之欢呼。
☞get off on the wrong foot 一开始就很不顺利
据说，古希腊人认为穿鞋的时候应该先穿右脚，后穿左脚。如果先穿了左脚，就会倒霉一整天。所以，左脚也被称作“the wrong foot（错的脚）”。久而久之，“get off on the wrong foot”就渐渐用来比喻“出师不利，第一印象不好”。比如：
He got off on the wrong foot by being late on his first day in the company.
他上班第一天就迟到，给人留下了不好的印象。
