第62期：Hit the Sack
这一天小小常上完课外班回到家，常爸问候小小常：
常爸
Good evening, son! How was your day?
（晚上好，儿子！你今天过的怎么样啊？）
小小常
It was great! I got an A on my test, and had my favorite fish and chips for dinner!
（好极了！我今天考试得了A，晚饭还吃了我最爱的炸鱼和薯条！）
常爸
Wow, that does sound like a great day! Did you get all of your homework done?
（哇，听起来真的很不错！你做完作业了吗？）
小小常
Yes, but I am feeling a little tired now.
（做完了，但是我现在有点儿累。）
常爸
Alright, well just hit the sack.
（好吧，那就去hit the sack吧。）
小小常
Hit the sack? I don't want to punch a bag, I just want to sleep.
（Hit the sack? 我可不想打袋子呀，我只想睡觉。）
常爸
Ha ha, hit the sack means go to bed! Don't worry. I don't want you to actually hit anything!
（不是呀，hit the sack就表示睡觉啊！放心。爸爸不是真的想让你打啥！）
小小常
You really got me, dad!
（你可吓到我了，爸爸！）
常爸
Now go hit the sack, Victor! Goodnight.
（那就去睡觉吧，小小常！晚安。）
小小常
Goodnight, Dad!（晚安，爸爸！）
之前我们“英语地道说”栏目在《hit the books. 你打书干嘛？？？》简单提到过hit the sack这个表达，它可不是“打麻袋”的意思哦！sack本意是麻袋，但也指床，hit the sack 表示“上床睡觉”。等同于go to sleep/bed。
需要注意的是，hit the sack表达的可不是慢吞吞地先坐在床上，然后上床睡觉，而是用于劳累后需要睡觉的场景。例如：
✍考试复习：
OK. Now go hit the sack. But after tomorrow's test, you will have to study seriously for next week's test. No more goofing off.
好了。现在去睡觉吧。但是明天的考试之后，你必须认真准备下周的考试，不要再混日子了。
✍长途旅行：
After the long road trip, we were all dead tired and ready to hit the sack as soon as we reached home. 
长途旅行后我们都累得要死，一到家就准备睡觉。
✍习惯熬夜：
My roommate likes to have the lights out by nine and I don't usually hit the sack until midnight, so it seems a real problem to fix.
我的室友喜欢九点就熄灯，而我通常要到半夜才睡觉，所以这似乎是一个真正需要解决的问题。

在现代床垫出现之前，17-18世纪的美国人通常睡在装满干草 (hay) 的大麻袋 (sack) 上。当工人们工作了一天，一下子躺倒在用麻袋做成的床上时，声音就像是在hit the sack（撞击麻袋），后来大约在1940年，hit the sack就逐渐用来表达“上床睡觉”啦。
除了hit the sack，也可以hit the hay。1880年以前，“hit the hay”指的是睡在谷仓里，大概是农场存放干草的地方。1902年，美国作家乔治‧艾德 (George Ade) 在《People You Know》一书中就曾写过，“He crawled into the hay at 9.30 p.m.” （他晚上9点半上床睡觉。）后来，hay也被用来指代bed.
学会了这两个短语是不是感觉连睡觉都不一样了呢？下次当你工作了一天筋疲力尽时，别忘了早点“hit the sack”哦！
