Hello, my name is Percious Nwankwo, I went to college at Harvard and worked there as an admissions and financial aid officer from 2009-2012. I later worked as an admissions consultant for InGenius Prep.
The first question I’ve been asked today is: What’s your impression of international students from China and what are some commonproblems they face during interviews.
As an admissions officer, my general impression was thatstudents from China are incredibly bright, driven, and can certainly handle thework load at an academically competitive university like Harvard.
I didn’t interview Chinese students in particular, but I’vedone a number of admission and alumni interviews. More generally, I’d say the common issue students face is nervousness.
However, nervousness is perfectly normal and I would advisestudents to embrace their nerves, recognize it’s OK, and even let your interviewer know that you’re a little nervous at the moment. I think it’ll be OK to admit, so you don’t have to pretend you’re not nervous, and doing so will likely alleviate the nervousness you are feeling.
The second question I've been asked today is: What is the Harvard's standard for admiting international students? Will there be big changes in the next few years?
The standard really is the same for international studentsas it is for students applying from the US.
The college is looking for strong academic record, which indicates an ability to handle the rigor. They are looking for students who engage with their communities, whether that be volunteering, taking part instudent government, or playing on a sports team. And lastly, they are looking for strong personal qualities.
I don’t know for sure, but I really don’t expect the admissions process to change too much in the near future. I do know that Harvard is always looking for top notch students that stand out in the application process.
In terms of a general trend in admissions, I understand there’s a trend to move away from standardized test scores. Some schools mayalso be considering an approach to replace the common app, and instead look at a portfolio of a student’s entire high school career. However, I believe that this change is still many years away.
The third question I’ve been asked today is: What is Harvard's acceptance rates for the past few years? Has the percentage of international Chinese students changed? And what does this mean or imply?
The acceptance rate has be 5.3, 5.9, 5.8% in the last 3 years respectively. I’m not privy to the stats of Chinese applicants in particular, but I imagine that they track this average.
What this means is that it’s incredibly competitive. And admissions officers are looking at an incredibly talented pool of students. Applications grow each year, but roughly the same number of students are admitted each year.
Most students can do the work, and it really comes down to students who set themselves apart in their application and can show why Harvard is a good fit and how they can plug themselves into the community that Harvardhas to offer.
