Dr. Jie Deng received his Ph.D. in geophysics from Yale University in 2019. Jie uses atomistic simulations, machine learning, and laboratory experiments to study material properties and key processes underlying the formation and evolution of planetary bodies, including phase transitions, element partitioning, and isotope fractionation. His recent work combines machine learning, and ab initio molecular dynamics to model the melting and crystallization processes of bridgmanite, with application to the magma ocean process and early evolution of terrestrial planets.

Dr. Jie Deng will join the Department of Geosciences at Princeton University as an assistant professor in 2022. He is searching for motivated students and postdocs to join his group to contribute to several computational and modeling researches. Students/postdocs with experiences in ab initio methods, molecular dynamics, materials science, geophysics, geochemistry, and machine learning are especially encouraged to apply.

Possible Projects

1. Ab initio atomistic modeling on the element partitioning for liquid/Vapor system;

2. Build machine learning potential for multicomponent minerals/Liquids;

3. Model grain boundaries of the polycrystalline system under compression/deformation;

4. Model the interior of super-Earth with the existing thermodynamic dataset;

5. Or other related projects that you are interested in.

Students will have the chance to work with world-class experts on machine learning, density functional theory, atomistic modeling, material sciences, geosciences, and mineral physics.
