第45期：a bad apple

今天Mike和常爸沟通完工作，就和小小常闲聊起来。

Mike

Oh, my goodness! My nephew is such a bad apple! He took his two younger cousins to climb trees in the wood and broke his leg!

（哦，我的天哪！我的侄子真是个bad apple！他带着他的两个小表弟去树林里爬树，结果把腿摔断了!）

常爸一听有人摔断腿，不禁关切一下：

常爸

Is he okay now? Some kids are naughty. you know, there is always a bad apple in every batch.

（他现在好了吗？有的孩子就是很淘气，你知道的，每一群孩子中总有一个bad apple。）

小小常

Did he break his leg because he ate a bad apple? It doesn't sound quite right.

（他摔断腿是因为他吃了坏苹果吗？这听起来不太对呀。）

Mike

Not at all, Victor! He broke his leg because he is a bad apple! But he is not really an apple. A bad apple refers to someone who causes a lot of trouble.

（完全不是这样，小小常！他摔断腿，因为他是个bad apple！但他并不是一个真的苹果。a bad apple是指总是制造麻烦的人。）

小小常

Oh, I see. I'm not a bad apple!

（啊，我明白了。我可不是个麻烦精!）

bad apple字面意思是坏苹果，但在口语中是“坏家伙”。

根据韦氏词典，bad apple 指给别人制造问题或者带来麻烦的人，特指：集体中某一个人的表现对其他人有消极、糟糕的影响。bad apple也称rotten apple。例如：

There is always a bad apple in every batch.

到哪儿都会有害群之马。

One rotten apple spoils the whole bunch.

一只烂苹果，烂一串苹果。

这个说法最早源于14世纪，引自杰弗里·乔叟的The Cook's Tale : It is better to take the rotten apple out of the bag than to have it rot all the other apples.（烂苹果一定要挑出来，不然其它所有苹果都会跟着烂掉。）

类似于我们汉语中的“一颗老鼠屎坏了一锅粥”。虽是老话，但也是真理。

社会学家亨利·L·蒂施勒曾在《社会学概论》中提到，The best way to deal with bad apples is to take them out of the group as quickly as possible.（对待害群之马最好的方式，就是尽快把他踢出阵营。)

苹果外表可人、酸甜可口，在西方受人喜爱，很多关苹果的英文表达都含有褒义。例如：

✍the Big Apple

特指“纽约城”。当你跟外国人交流时谈到纽约的时候，你既可以说New York City，也可以说the Big Apple。例如：

The little girl is from the Big Apple.
这个小女孩来自于纽约。

✍The apple of one's eye

“某人眼中的苹果”表示某个特别珍爱的人/物。例如：

The little girl is the apple of his eye. He loves her so much.

这个小女孩是他的掌上明珠。他非常爱她。

✍as American as apple pie

apple pie（苹果派）是经典的美国饭后甜点，“像苹果派一样美国”就是说地道的美国范儿，所以这个短语表示“典型美式风格”，指具有典型美式文化或价值观。例如：
