“世界驰名双标”用英语怎么说？外交部给出答案

在6月1日的外交部例行记者会上，外交部发言人赵立坚谈到美国的双标时说道：

为什么美方将香港的所谓“港独”和黑色暴力分子美化为“英雄”、“斗士”，而将美国国内抗议种族歧视的民众称之为“暴徒”？为什么美方对香港警察克制文明执法横加指责，却对国内抗议者威胁开枪射击，甚至动用国民警卫队？美方的做法是最典型的“世界驰名双重标准”。

“世界驰名双重标准”该怎么翻译呢？

❶ 汉译英时切忌望文生义，“黑色暴力分子”如果简单译为black rioters，一定让人摸不着头脑，还会引起误会。

这里的黑色暴力，是指暴力分子大多身着黑衣，所以译为black-clad rioters。

❷ Clad in something 指穿着某种衣服，如：

a woman clad in white
身着白衣的女士

而名词与-clad构成的复合词，则表示穿着某种衣服的，或被什么东西覆盖的，如：

leather-clad 身着皮衣的
snow-clad hills 白雪覆盖的山峦

为什么美方对香港警察克制文明执法横加指责，却对国内抗议者威胁开枪射击，甚至动用国民警卫队？

Why did the US have so many problems with the restrained and civilized way of law enforcement by the Hong Kong police but have no problem at all with threatening to shoot at and mobilizing the National Guard against its domestic protesters?

这句话的翻译运用了have a problem with something这一表达的两个变型，通过近似的形式，进一步突出了对比，简洁又有力。

have a problem with something
不喜欢某事或不赞同某事
have no problem with something
对某人来说不成问题，或同意某事

举两个例子：

My parents would have a problem with me having a party at home.
我父母不会赞同我在家开派对。
I have no problem with working on Sundays.
周日加班对我来说不成问题。

美方的做法是最典型的“世界驰名双重标准”。这背后反映出的问题是值得人们深思和警惕的。

This double-standard way of behaving is so typical of the US. The reasons behind this are worth reflecting on and staying vigilant against.

❶ 第一句可以拆分为两层意思：美国的做法是典型的双重标准、美国的双重标准世界驰名。

双重标准的形容词表达为double-standard。译文对典型的和世界驰名进行了合译：so typical of the US。

Typical最常见的意思是典型的、有代表性的。Typical of somebody常用来表达某人的行为是其一贯的作风。

If you say that something is typical of a person, situation, or thing, you are criticizing them or complaining about them and saying that they are just as bad or disappointing as you expected them to be.
如果将typical of用于人、情境或是事件，可以表达其恶劣程度、令人失望的程度不出所料。

用typical of来表达“双重标准是美国的一贯作风、而且已众所周知”，是非常贴切的。

❷ “值得深思和警惕”可翻译为worth reflecting on and staying vigilant against。

值得做某事可以表达为worth doing something，需注意动词ing形式。

深思，即反思，可以译为reflect on或reflect upon。保持警惕则可以译为stay vigilant against，注意介词搭配。
