写在前面

昨天发了这篇文章，有读者问有没有英文原件。我翻回2016年的邮件，竟然真找到了大哥写的英文原稿。但因为字数限制不能发在留言，为了满足读者的要求，现附上英文再发一遍。

可以看出，美国孩子写的英文，有点随心所欲的感觉，但我翻译的时候，就不能随心所欲了。

2016年5月份，双胞胎所在的小学4-5年级混合班有一个为期一周的"淘金"课外教学。这些9-10岁的孩子们会走一遍当年加州淘金者走过的路线，吃住在途中，体验一下当年淘金者的期待，渴求和艰苦，把历史知识真正学活。

这个活动有一个要求，老师让家人给孩子每人每天写一封信（对孩子是保密的），然后在每天晚饭后，由"邮差"把信拿出来，给孩子们一个惊喜。

周一到周四，每天一封信，两个孩子就要写8封信啊！用英文写是必须滴，最起码不能有语法错误，用词也得恰当点，内容还不能重样，这可真不是一般的任务！

好在家里劳力多，我就把任务派了下去。大哥，二哥，爸爸，我，一人负责一天，每人写两封，一封给大双，一封给小双，刚好四天8封信。

大家想些什么，就写什么，彼此之间也不必交流。他们每个人自己把信装到信封里交给我，我再集中起来交给老师，于是就有了这一系列的"家信"。

现在回头看看这些信，我这个妈妈写的最"啰嗦"，一提笔，感情的闸门就打开收不住了，有点话唠的感觉。爸爸写的简洁，大哥写的幽默，二哥写的穿越，还真是各具特色。

在我忘记细节之前，赶紧把这些"家书"串起来，也算是岁月留痕吧。

上篇登了妈妈给儿子的信，这篇是大哥给弟弟的信。

大哥给弟弟的信，除了鼓励，还是鼓励。很谢谢身边有这么一个老大，他对弟弟的影响，应该说，不小。

（二）大哥写给小双的信

亲爱的小双，

是我，你的大哥！你那个比其他几个哥哥都又酷又棒的大哥-：）

为什么我说自己又酷又棒Awesome呢？那是因为我的名字从C开始，以arl结束。如果你查字典Awesome，你再查以C打头，以arl结尾的单词，你会发现，他们的定义是一样的：-）

（对了，这封信的开头和大双的一摸一样，因为你们是双胞胎！）

不过这封信不是说我有多酷多棒，是说你有多酷多棒！

说你又酷又棒，是因为你总是寻求机会提高自己。特别是在你的篮球技术方面. 我还记得你当初和我说要去附近的小学打球，你要练习左手运球和投篮，因为你在这方面很欠缺。很多孩子都愿意花时间在自己擅长的方面，不愿意面对自己欠缺的地方。

你有一种"growing mindset"成长型的思维方式，那意味着你不局限自己，愿意花时间去努力提高自己不足的地方，而不是说：嗯，我这方面天生不好，努力也没用。你这样的思维方式才是又酷又棒呢！

所以啊，你知道吗？又酷又棒的是你！

所以啊，保持这种状态，在你自己需要提高的方面，努力吧！

英文原稿：

Dear Jo,

It’s me. Your big brother, who is awesome. More awesome than that other big brother you have.

Why am I so much more awesome? Well, I think it’s because my name starts with a ‘C’ and ends with an ‘arl’. I think if you look up the word “awesome” in the dictionary, you’ll pretty much find that the exact definition is someone whose name starts with a ‘C’ and ends with an ‘arl’.

(Yeah, that’s right. This letter begins the same way as the letter I wrote to Jason.)

But this letter isn’t really about me or how awesome I am.

It’s about you, and how awesome you are.

You’re awesome because you seek improvement in yourself, and especially in your basketball skills. I remember when you told me that you wanted to go to John Muir Elementary to go practice your left-handed dribbling and shots.

Very few kids would want to practice something they’re bad at! Most kids just want to do what they’re good at.

You have something called the “growth mindset”; that means you’re always figuring out how to grow yourself and your abilities. That’s awesome!

And you know what? You’re awesome. So keep on drilling yourself on the areas that you want to improve.

I’m proud to be your older brother.

亲爱的大双，

不过真正的转折从这开始！

大双，你是一个想的非常周到的孩子，我可以感觉到，你非常体谅关心他人。一个很明显的例子就是你常常问妈妈近况如何，常常主动去拥抱她，不是所有你这个年龄的孩子能做到这些的！

事实上，有一颗敏感心的年轻男孩不多，你是其中之一。

继续保持呵护它吧，长大后，你会成为一个很值得结交的朋友。

另外，我很惊喜地看到，你是一个惊人的小作家。你和小双都展示出了令人难以置信的作家的素质：你们大量的阅读，写文章时使用的词汇都挺精确，高雅。

有的时候，我很嫉妒你们俩，甚至嫉妒你们两个可以互相斗嘴, 吵架。也许你们没有意识到，你们这种同呼吸共命运的彼此心灵交流，会让你们俩个的理解包容能力要比你们的同龄人高，保持这些吧。

当你的大哥，我很自豪。

But this is where it deviates.

Jason. You’re a very thoughtful young kid. I can tell because you care about other people’s thoughts and feelings. You’re asking mom how she’s doing, and you know when to hug and take care of her. Not all kids are like that!

In fact, you’re probably in the minority of young kids who’re that sensitive. Keep at it, and you’ll grow up to be someone who’s an incredible friend some day.

In addition, I love that you’re such an amazing writer. You and Jo both display the qualities of people who are incredible writers: you guys read constantly and you use sophisticated vocabulary.

I’m so jealous that you two have each other to banter with. You may not be aware of it yet, but by having each other you two are developing your minds and abilities far faster than anyone else your age.

Keep at it, kiddo.
