世间万物皆有情。很多时候，动物也能与人类建立起深厚的感情。
47岁的Dina Theissen来自佛罗里达州，她没有想到，自己三年前的一次善举竟然带来了意想不到的回报。
故事还要从2015年春天说起。
Dina在自家花园的一棵树旁发现了一只刚出生不久的小鸟。它是从树上的巢中摔下来的。
在咨询了一家野生动物救助机构后，Dina决定先在一旁观察它的妈妈会不会来找它。然而，鸟妈妈并没有出现。Dina知道，如果不做些什么的话，它很快就会死去。
于是，Dina和她的家人将这只幼鸟带回了家中，用鞋盒给它做了一个窝，并给它取名叫Gracie。
Dina特地请教了动物专家如何喂养幼鸟。她和丈夫，还有女儿将食物切碎浸湿，每三十分钟就轮流给它喂食。
在Dina一家人的精心照料下，Gracie一天天茁壮成长起来。

Gracie刚刚来到家中时，Dina一家还辩认不出它是什么种类的鸟儿，也不能确定它的性别。
随着Gracie渐渐换上蓝色的羽毛，一家人惊喜地发现，这个小家伙原来是一只漂亮的雄性蓝冠鸦（blue jay）。
为了让Gracie接触大自然，早日回归野外，Dina经常带它去自家的露台上，并开始像真正的鸟类妈妈一样，教Gracie觅食的本领。
Dina说道：
“An unbreakable bond was developed on that patio, from the endless hours Gracie and I spent together. After a while I saw him notice the insects flying around and we became a great foraging team. I would lift him up and lead him toward the insects so that he could learn to forage himself. It was amazing to see him succeed in such a remarkable way. I was his mommy in every way.”

“He flew up to a low branch and came back down to me, refusing to leave. A week and a half later he gathered his courage, flew up into the tree and began to explore his beautiful world. It wasn't easy for us, but that was our ultimate goal and we knew it was for the best.”

Sometimes Gracie likes to play with his old toys on his visits, like beads and plastic lizards, and other times he likes to just perch and chirp, enjoying the company of his family.
在拜访时，有时Gracie喜欢玩它的旧玩具，比如珠子和塑料蜥蜴，其他的时候它喜欢停歇在家里，叽叽喳喳地叫，享受着家人的陪伴。

His visits sometimes last only minutes, as Gracie is a very inquisitive bird and still has so much of the world to explore — but when tragedy struck his family, Gracie’s visits suddenly became a bit longer, and so much more important. 
它的拜访有时只持续几分钟，因为Gracie是一只好奇心非常强的鸟，外面仍有很多精彩世界要探索——但是当噩耗打击这个家庭时，Gracie的拜访时间突然变长了一些，也变得格外重要。

Gracie仿佛知道不幸笼罩了这个家庭，在Dina与癌症作斗争的过程中，它会经常飞来陪伴她，并且停留更长的时间，鸟儿如报恩一般的举动给Dina带来很多勇气和信心。
"Gracie would fly over, come in through the little hole in our porch screen and sit next to me on the couch. I was very weak and tired, and he would be chirping away, acting like he was having a conversation with me. It’s like he knew that something was wrong — he was showing empathy.”
“Gracie会飞过来，通过我们家纱门上的一个小洞进来，坐在我身边的沙发上。那时我非常虚弱和疲倦，它就会叽叽喳喳地叫，好像在和我说话。这就像它知道有些事不对劲——它能感受到我的痛苦。”

Dina的丈夫Ken说：
"During that difficult time, Gracie gave us hope and helped us to focus on the positive. During his visits, we didn't have anger, uncertainty or fear, and Dina was comforted. It was incredible to witness the difference he made to Dina when she was recovering from surgery and going through chemotherapy.”

幸运的是，在经过化疗和三次大手术之后，Dina终于战胜了癌症，恢复了健康。
她和鸟儿之间的奇妙情谊被丈夫Ken记录在书中，取名为Gracie's Wild Adventures。
Ken把妻子比作童话故事中的白雪公主，因为她们都非常善良，也热爱小动物：
“When I first met her 24 years ago, my dad said to me that she reminded him of Snow White. He said he could imagine all the little animals around her.”
“24年前，当我第一次见到她时，我父亲对我说，她使他想起了白雪公主。他说，他可以想象所有的小动物围绕着她的场景。”

“I never thought I would have this sort of bond with a bird, let alone a blue jay. He is the sweetest, most kind little bird in the whole world. He came at a time when we needed him and he has totally changed our lives.”
