其实窦靖童的英文功底非常扎实。早在2013年，当时还只有16岁的窦靖童晒出一段自弹自唱的原创歌曲视频，歌曲名叫On The Beach，也是由她本人作词作曲：

视频中，窦靖童也回答了让我们困惑已久的问题：为什么她一直用英文写歌呢？

Interviewer: When you were just starting out, what made you decide to stick with writing and singing in English?

最开始写歌的时候，为什么坚持用英语写歌/唱歌呢？

Leah Dou：When I first started writing music, I was living in the state of… I was studying in Michigan. So it was only normal to be writing in English cause you know, I was in an English-speaking environment. All my thoughts were processed in English, so that just came naturally.

最开始写歌的时候，我当时住在密歇根州，在那里学习。所以用英语写歌是一件很正常的事，因为我在一个说英语的环境中。我所有的思想都是用英语来处理的，所以一切都很自然。

*英大注：窦靖童当时就读于美国密歇根州的Interlochen Center for the Arts（因特劳根艺术中心），是全美最顶级的艺术类高中之一。

But then, when I went back to China, I figured that because you know the Chinese language, it has such an incredibly long history. Each character has, the meaning behind it is always really rich.

后来我回到了中国，我发现中文拥有非常悠久的历史。每个字背后的意思都非常丰富。

It's hard to write when you want to be direct about something. Because in English language you can kind of be direct. Yeah, I just find it difficult to write in Mandarin. I will, someday. English is what I'm writing with for now.

当你想直接地进行表达时，用中文很难，英语却很直接。所以用中文写歌对我来说有点困难。未来我会的，不过现在我还是在用英文写。

Leah’s dad Dou Wei is a successful musician too, known for composing experimental work that crosses genres from folk to ambient, and he made a formidable impression on the Chinese rock scene.

不过事实上，窦靖童的音乐之路并没有受父母太多的影响：

Surprisingly, Leah’s parents haven’t given her much advice, instead allowing her the space she needs to navigate show business on her own.

令人感到意外的是，窦靖童的父母在音乐上并没有给与她过多的指点，而是给了她在娱乐圈独自成长的空间。

“They’ve been super hands-off. It’s probably because I’ve asked them. Family is family but music is music and also work, I like to separate the two,” she says about staying professional.

“他们完全不干涉。可能是因为我让他们这样的吧。家庭是家庭，但是音乐是音乐，也是工作，我喜欢把两者区分开来，” 窦靖童非常职业地说。

After fighting it for a while, as many celebrity kin often do, Leah learned to embrace the association with her parents. “I used to get annoyed, when I was a teen, there was a point in my life where I was really tired of being compared to my parents and didn’t really feel I had an identity.

就像很多“星二代”一样，窦靖童也抗争过很久，然后才学会接纳她与父母之间的这种联系。“青春期的时候，我很烦恼，很厌倦人家总是把我和我的父母进行比较，他们从没有意识到我是一个独立的个体。

You get used to it and realize it doesn’t really matter what other people say because they are your parents, that’s the truth and you love them. What’s the point in getting all angry about what other people are saying. ” she reflected.

后来我习惯了，也开始意识到，其实没必要在乎别人怎么看，因为他们是我的父母，这是事实，而且我很爱他们。因为他人的话而生气，有什么意义呢？”
