the zodiac 指“黄道带、黄道十二宫”，即把天空分成12个等份，以观察星体所处的位置，从而判断时间或运势。其实黄道带就是人类假想的、观察星体位置的坐标系。
zodiac signs 一般指“星座”，前面加上 Chinese，则指“生肖”。
当我们问别人星座或属相时，就可以说：
Which sign of the zodiac were you born under?
你是什么星座/你属什么？
一般日常口语中问星座/属相，直接说“What's your sign”就可以了。

bump 作名词表示 a part of a flat surface that is not even, but raised above the rest of it 平坦表面上不平坦、凸出来的一部分，翻译成汉语是“隆起、凸块”，常比喻事情不顺利、坎坷。
bump 作名词还引申出“上涨、增长”的意思，因为凸块就是从平面增长出来的东西，两个含义相通。我们在《霉霉和碧昂丝加速通货膨胀》中讲过，复习一下：

ahead 表示未来的概念，写作中可替换 in the future 这类常见说法。
How will your Chinese zodiac animal fare in 2024? Every lunar year there are a handful that offend the guardian deities, or tai sui, and traditional belief holds that people born under those signs can expect to encounter more challenges than others.
你的生肖在 2024 年的运势如何？每个农历年都会有少数生肖犯太岁，传统观念认为，这些属相的人可能会遇到更多挑战。
How will your Chinese zodiac animal fare in 2024?，Chinese zodiac animal 也是“生肖”的意思。fare 是这句话里的动词，意思是“表现”，常见搭配是 fare well / badly / better 成功/失败/更成功。看两个例句：
Although Chicago has fared better than some cities, unemployment remains a problem.
虽说芝加哥比其他一些城市情况好些，但失业仍是个问题。
He wondered how She had fared in the interview.
他想知道她面试情况如何。
the guardian deities 指“太岁”，deity [ˈdeɪəti] 表示 a god or goddess ，offend the guardian deities 就是“犯太岁”的意思。
太岁原本是古人假想出来的一颗星体，它和木星差不多，运行一周是12年，但和木星运行方向相反。古人根据太岁的位置来纪年，《资治通鉴》开头用的就是太岁纪年法：
起著雍摄提格，尽玄黓困敦。
“摄提格”“困敦”就是太岁纪年法的十二星次的名字。
对应的年份便是：
起于公元前403年，止于公元前369年。
屈原《离骚》中也用了太岁纪年法来交待自己出生年月日：
摄提贞于孟陬兮，惟庚寅吾以降。
“摄提贞”就是“摄提格”，当时还没有“书同文”，同一个字在不同的书里常常有不同的写法。“摄提贞”是太岁纪年法的年份，“孟陬”是个月份，“庚寅”是个日子。
在古代，天文历算需要很高的专业门槛，懂天文历法的都是高精尖技术人才，所以文化人著书立说会采用太岁纪年法，显得自己很牛叉。
后来，太岁演变成一种神祇信仰，被民间奉为守护神。人们在施工、建房或安葬时习惯于避开太岁方位，以免招致不祥之事。民间也形成了一些说法，比如“不要在太岁头上动土”。
这里再岔开一笔，因为太岁一周是12年，因此“12”这个数字被周朝人称为“天下大数”，于是12的倍数也有了神秘意义，比如孙悟空72变，猪八戒36变，都是12的倍数。36和72之和等于108，而108是12的9倍，9又是十进制里最大的数字，所以108又被赋予一种神秘色彩，比如梁山108将，佛珠有108颗，红楼梦原稿有108回。

01
Dragon
Dragons offend two different tai sui this year, so be prepared for a few bumps ahead.
They should boost their luck with auspicious events such as getting married, starting a family, buying property or starting a business. There is a lucky star that will also help with promotions and progression in their career.
Two cursed stars are present for Dragons this year, which will affect health and lead to accidents. To abate these curses, they should give blood or get their teeth cleaned at the dentist in the third or ninth month of the lunar calendar.
今年属龙的双犯太岁，所以要做好心理准备。
属龙的人今年运势不佳，宜通过结婚、成家、置业或创业等吉事来提升运势。有吉星相助，事业上也能得到晋升和发展。
龙属相的人今年有两颗凶星出现，会影响健康，导致意外事故。要化解厄运，应在农历三月或九月献血或到牙医处洗牙。
auspicious 形容词，指“吉利的、吉祥的”，反义词是 inauspicious。

Snake
This will be a good year for learning new things and further education for Snakes, so if there is a course or a hobby they have always wanted to pursue, this is a great time for it.
This is also their year for love, so single Snakes will meet their partner this year.
Snakes working in male-dominated industries will have a good chance for career advancement. It is also a good year for promotions for those in clerical or white-collar jobs.
There are two unlucky stars for Snakes this year that will cast a shadow over their health and relationships. Extra effort made in communicating with their partners may prevent potential break-ups.
对于属蛇人来说，今年是学习新事物、继续深造的好年份，因此如果他们有一直想学习的课程或爱好，今年是大好时机。
今年也是属蛇人的爱情年，因此单身的属蛇人今年会遇到自己的伴侣。
在男性主导的行业中工作的属蛇人，将有很好的晋升机会。对于从事文职或白领工作的属蛇人来说，今年也是升职的好时机。

further 可做动词，表示 to help sth to develop or be successful “促进、增进”，常见搭配有 further one's career 发展事业，further one's education 深造。
cast a shadow over 是个常见的搭配，表示“给…蒙上上层阴影、对…产生影响”，可以替换 affect，我们在「外刊精读写作12期」中讲科技时也遇到过这个表达：
The technologies expected to dominate the new decade also seem to cast a dark shadow.
预计会主导下一个十年的科技似乎也给世界投下一层阴影。

Horse
This will be a good year for Horses to expand their horizons, so they should consider attending seminars or furthering their education.
Their lucky stars will help them overcome obstacles but there are also cursed stars that will lead to accidents, so stay away from high-risk water sports such as scuba diving and jet skiing this year.
Other cursed stars will affect the home and interpersonal relationships. A good way to balance that bad luck would be to follow the Buddhist tradition and be vegetarian on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar calendar month.
对于属马的人来说，今年是开拓视野的好年份，因此他们应该考虑参加研讨会或继续深造。
他们的吉星将帮助他们克服障碍，但也有一些凶星会带来意外，因此今年要远离高风险的水上运动，如潜水和水上摩托。

vegetarian 是 vegetable 变化而来的，作形容词表示“吃素的”，作名词是“素食者”。

Sheep
This year Sheep will reap the rewards of effort put in, so it’s a time to work towards their goals.
Their lucky star will help with wealth, so it will be a good time to invest in new ventures. Sheep working in female-dominated industries such as jewellery and cosmetics will have a good chance for career advancement.
But bad stars this year will also affect wealth, and relationships, meaning there will be money disputes ahead. Sheep should be careful about lending to friends and family, or offering themselves as a guarantor of loans.
今年，属羊人的努力将得到回报，因此是努力实现目标的一年。
他们的吉星将助力财富，因此是投资新企业的好时机。从事珠宝、化妆品等女性主导的行业的属羊人会有不错的晋升机会。
但今年的凶星也会影响财运和人际关系，这意味着未来会有金钱纠纷。属羊的人在借贷给亲朋好友或为贷款提供担保时要小心谨慎。
reap 是 obtain 的意思，表示收获，后面可以跟 crops, fruits, rewards 等词，有一个谚语：
You reap what you sow.
种瓜得瓜，种豆得豆。
reap the rewards of effort put in 中，put in 是过去分词形式的后置定语，修饰 effort，整个短语的字面意思是：收获所投努力的奖励。
venture 指风险比较高的项目、企业，商业领域的“风险投资”英文就是 venture capital。
这个词也可以做动词，表示“冒险做”，搭配为 venture into/on，如：
This is the first time the company has ventured into movie production. 

这是这家公司首次涉足电影制作。

Monkey
Things will go well for Monkeys this year, especially for those seeking partnerships, collaborations and networking.
Work is also great for this animal sign as this is a year of progression, meaning there’s a chance for a raise or promotion.
Cursed stars will lead to some anxiety about people talking behind their backs. Be careful when entering into contracts and legal agreements with counterparties and make sure to consult professionals when dealing with legal matters.
属猴的人今年会诸事顺利，尤其是对于那些寻求合伙、合作和社交关系的人来说。
属猴的人今年工作运势也不错，今年是发展之年，有加薪或晋升的机会。
凶星会让人担心别人在背后议论自己。与对方签订合同和法律协议时要小心谨慎，在处理法律事务时一定要咨询专业人士。
counterpart 意思是 a person or thing that has the same position or function as sb / sth else in a different place or situation，指职位、地位相当的人，文中可以理解为，对方公司与自己职务、地位对等的人，再看个例句：

俄罗斯外交部长与中国外交部长举行了会谈。

Rooster
Roosters match with the guardian deity this year, which means there will be many people to help them along the way, as well as many opportunities arising from networking.
Their lucky stars will help overcome obstacles, so whenever they are in trouble there will be benefactors who will come to their aid.
There is a small unlucky star this year that will affect Roosters’ finances. A good strategy to balance this will be making a large, big-ticket purchase to fulfil a “happy financial loss”, such as a luxury handbag or a car.
There is a strong romance star this year but be mindful that relationships will often be impermanent.
属鸡的人今年合太岁，一路上会有很多人帮助他们，人际交往也会带来很多机会。
吉星会帮助他们克服困难，所以每当他们遇到困难时，就会有贵人前来相助。
今年有一颗小凶星影响属鸡人的财运。一个很好的平衡策略是购买大件、昂贵的商品来实现“幸福的经济损失”，比如一个奢侈包包或一辆汽车。
今年有一颗强大的爱情星，但要注意感情无常。
benefactor 意思是 a person who gives money or other help to a person or an organization “施主、赞助人”，与之相对的是 beneficiary，指 a person who gains as a result of sth “受益者、受惠人”。
big-ticket 意思是 costing a lot of money “高价的”，如 big-ticket items 高价项目。注意这个词只能放在名词前，修饰名词，不能放在be动词后面作表语。
impermanent 是在 permanent（永久的）前加否定前缀 im-，即“临时的、无常的”。带有im-前缀的词还有：immobilize 使固定、impossible 不可能的、immature 不成熟的、impolite 不礼貌的、imbalance 失衡。

Dog
Dogs conflict with the guardian deity this year and should use auspicious events – getting married, starting a family, buying property or starting a business – to wash the bad luck away. They can also attend weddings and parties to boost their luck.
Unfortunately Dogs don’t have lucky stars to help them, so they will have to rely on themselves for a lot of things. There is also a big cursed star that will affect their finances this year, so avoid any aggressive investments.
There are also bad stars that will affect Dogs’ health and home. They can balance this energy by going to give blood or to the dentist in the third or ninth month of the lunar calendar.
属狗的人今年与太岁相冲，应借助结婚、成家、置业或创业等吉事来冲淡霉运。他们还可以参加婚礼和聚会来提升运势。
不幸的是，属狗的人没有吉星相助，所以很多事情只能靠自己。今年还有一颗大凶星影响他们的财运，因此要避免激进的投资。
此外，还有凶星影响属狗人的健康和家庭。他们可以在农历三月或九月去献血或看牙医，以平衡负面能量。

Pig
Pigs will have a good year in terms of networking and relationships as well as their wealth and career, so there is a good chance for a promotion. Long-term goals will also be achieved this year.
The Year of the Dragon will be big for romance, so single Pigs can meet the love of their life. This will be a good time to attend social events such as weddings and reunions to meet your match.
Unlucky stars will mean Pigs are a bit absent-minded this year, so remember to buy travel insurance before going abroad.
This will also be a year of volatility, so even though it is a year for wealth, pigs should be aware of their risk appetite when investing.
属猪的人今年在社交、爱情以及财富和事业方面都会有不错的发展，因此升职加薪的机会很大。长期目标也将在今年实现。
龙年将是浪漫的一年，单身属猪人会邂逅自己的真爱。今年是参加社交活动（如婚礼和聚会）以邂逅另一半的好时机。
凶星意味着属猪人今年会有点心不在焉，所以出国前记得购买旅行保险。

be big for 意思是指在某个方面或领域取得重大的、显著的成就或进展，be big for romance 可以理解为在浪漫关系方面将会有很大的发展或机遇。
appetite 指“胃口”，risk appetite 就是“接纳风险的胃口”，也就是能忍受多大的风险，用专业一点的话讲叫“风险偏好”，也可以用 one's taste for risk 表示。

Rat
Rats match the tai sui this year so it will be a good year for networking and relationships.
Lucky stars are shining on the careers of Rats so there is a good chance for a promotion at work. Leadership is also in the stars, so this will be a particularly good year for Rats in law enforcement.
There is also a lucky star for wealth, but there are cursed stars that will lead to accidents, so Rats should stay away from high-risk adventure sports.
属鼠的人今年与太岁相合，因此在社交和爱情方面会有不错的发展。
吉星高照，属鼠的人今年事业运势大好，工作上有升职加薪的机会。吉星显示有望进入领导层，因此今年对于从事执法工作的属鼠人来说是特别好的一年。
还有一颗吉星照耀财富，但也有一些会导致意外的凶星，因此属鼠人应远离高风险的冒险运动。

Oxen clash with the tai sui this year, so be prepared for a lot of misunderstandings and bad gossip. But they will reap the rewards of work they have put in, so it’s a year to progress towards goals.
Fortunately there are a lot of lucky stars that will help overcome obstacles. While there is a chance of some failures this year, benefactors are there to help them out.
Bad stars will affect health and home, particularly for those who live with elderly family members. This will be a good year for Oxen to renovate, to refresh the energy of their homes.
属牛人今年犯太岁，所以要做好心理准备，可能会出现很多误会和流言蜚语。但付出就会有收获，今年是朝着目标前进的一年。
幸运的是，有很多吉星帮助克服困难。虽然今年可能遇到一些失败，但有贵人相助。

Tigers have a great year for wealth ahead. Their lucky stars will help them gain a promotion and pay rise, and open up new markets for entrepreneurs.
Travelling will boost their luck this year, so take any opportunities for business travel.
Unlucky stars will lead to accidents this year, so remember to buy travel insurance before going abroad.
属虎的人今年财运亨通。他们的吉星将帮助他们升职加薪，并为创业者开辟新的市场。
旅行会提升运势，因此要抓住任何出差的机会。
凶星表示，今年会有意外事故，因此出国前记得购买旅行保险。

Rabbit
Rabbits conflict with the guardian deity so this will be a bad year for networking, and interpersonal relationships will be messy.
Unfortunately, Rabbits don’t have lucky stars to help them so they will have to rely on themselves for a lot of things.
Bad stars will also mean it’s easy to get into accidents that lead to injury this year, so Rabbits should give blood or get their teeth cleaned at the dentist in the second or eighth month of the lunar calendar to balance the bad energy.
属兔人犯太岁，所以今年在人脉方面会比较糟糕，人际关系也会比较混乱。
不幸的是，属兔人没有吉星相助，很多事情只能靠自己。
凶星也意味着今年容易发生意外，导致受伤，所以属兔人应该在农历二月或八月去献血或去牙医那里洗牙，以平衡煞气。
