Community可能是英语中最常见的单词之一，但是要用好它并不是一件容易的事情，一个主要原因是单词的用法比较灵活。
很多人会将community理解为“社区”或者“小区”，但是这一理解并不完全正确。“社区”或者“小区”偏重于地域概念，但是community强调的是“群体”。如果要指国内的“小区”，我们可以说residential compounds。比如彭博社去年在关于中国的报道里面有这样一个句子：
From Monday, 7,565 residential compounds that have had no virus infections for two weeks will have their lockdowns lifted.
《朗文词典》对于community的一个定义是：the people who live in the same area, town etc. 即单词可以理解为“群体，团体”。举个例子，The local community was shocked by the murders. 这一句子应该理解为“当地社区居民对这些谋杀案感到震惊”。
在外刊新闻报道中经常可以读到the black community, the Asian community这样的说法，这里的community也理解为“群体”，即“黑人群体”和“亚裔群体”。
对于中文里面经常出现的“XX界”，我们也可以用community来表示，比如“商业界”可以说the business community，“学术界”可以说the academic community，“科学界”则是the scientific community
除了表示“群体”之外，community还有一些其他用法，比如the community意思相当于society and the people in it，即我们所说的“社会”。要表达“让某人回归社会”，我们可以说reintegrate somebody into the community。比如：The trend is towards reintegrating mentally ill people into the community. 目前的趋势是将精神病人重新融入社会当中。
同时，community还可以表示“（社区或团体的）归属感”（the feeling that you belong to a group and that this is a good thing），比如：People feel sad about the loss of community. 句子应该理解为“人们为社区归属感的丧失感到难过”。
Community也可以作为名词修饰语和其他名词搭配，构成双名词结构，比如community leaders, community relations, community problems，关于名词修饰语的知识可以参考这篇文章：英语名词可以修饰名词吗？
