It is precisely because governments, politicians and people from both sides chose to "stand on the right side of history" that we broke the ice more than 40 years ago and developed a fruitful relationship.

Your Excellency Vice-Foreign Minister Le Yucheng,
Distinguished guests,
Dear friends,
Welcome to Vision China for a discussion on the future of China-US relations at a time when ties between the biggest developing country and the biggest developed country are at a new crossroads.
Over the past 40 years and more, relations between China and the United States have made historic progress despite ups and downs. Thanks to unremitting endeavors across the Pacific, the growth of bilateral ties has benefited the two peoples tremendously and greatly promoted peace, stability and prosperity of the world. In the past few years, however, we have witnessed unprecedented difficulties and setbacks, and the world suffers with us.
In the face of profound changes unseen in a century and at a moment when humankind is confronted with crucial choices as to where we’re heading, President Xi Jinping has stressed on many occasions that "we must stand on the right side of history". This notion,  we believe, applies to China-US relations in particular. It is precisely because governments, politicians and people from both sides chose to "stand on the right side of history" that we broke the ice more than 40 years ago and developed a fruitful relationship.
As a bridge linking China and the world, we at China Daily -- and with this Vision China event today -- are joining the aspiration to see China-US relations walk on the “right side of history”, as history requires.
To be on the right side of history, we should move forward from where we began. "Pingpong diplomacy" marked a thaw in Sino-US relations that paved the way for the establishment of diplomatic ties. People-to-people exchanges raise public support for a meaningful friendship and substantial cooperation. The right side of history means removing barriers and building bridges rather than erecting walls and digging ditches, or closing doors and blocking roads.
To be on the right side of history, the two sides need to act where responsibility lies. Responsibility, in the first place, for building a new type of major-country relations. The China-US relationship is widely considered the most important in today’s world because how the countries handle their relations matters a great deal to the rest of the world. History tells us that the decisions of major countries on the direction of their relations determine to a large extent the fate and future of mankind. The right side of history calls for a relationship featuring “non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation”, as was the consensus reached between President Xi and President Barack Obama at their summit back in 2013.
To be on the right side of history, the two key members of the United Nations should start where they are most expected. As the raging Covid-19 shows no signs of abating and confirmed cases worldwide have just passed 100 million, there is the urgent need for nations to join hands to build a global community of health for all. When President Xi visited the United Nations office in Geneva in 2017, he delivered a keynote speech, Work Together to Build a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind. Four years on, particularly since the outbreak of the global public health crisis, people have become increasingly aware that humankind is a community sharing weal and woe. The right side of history asks China and the United States to share, and not shirk, the responsibility of strengthening international partnerships and global governance.
And to be on the right side of history, the two biggest economies of the world must work together where they carry the most weight. The two countries account for more than a third of global economic output and half of global growth. Due to the fallout of the pandemic, the global economy has encountered the most severe crisis and challenge since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Different calculations in their economic, trade and technological policies might either impart momentum or put a brake on global development. “The right side of history" will prove that openness and togetherness prevail over confrontation and decoupling. Responsible members of the international community should work to advance the building of an open world economy.
Before concluding, I would like to quote the lines from the first American president to set foot on the soil of New China, lines which are quoted quite often  these days: “It is not our common beliefs that have brought us together here, but our common interests and our common hopes." Things have changed as time passed by and the world is no longer what it used to be. However, we’re strongly convinced that the "common interests" and "common hopes" that President Richard Nixon spoke of are still relevant, and what's more, they should be built upon.
Thank you.
