《消失的她》在上映后短短几天的时间里，票房不断取得突破，打破内地影史悬疑片暑期档票房纪录。今天我们看一下 Variety 杂志（美国文化娱乐权威杂志）的报道：
一、如何描述电影票房？
《消失的她》创内地悬疑片暑期档票房纪录，Variety 在介绍电影票房时用了不同的表达，我们一起来看：
1）top-grossing
Chinese mystery drama “Lost in the Stars” was the top-grossing film on the planet over the latest weekend.
《消失的她》这部中国悬疑剧成为了上周末全球票房最高的电影。
top-grossing 是形容词，意思是“最高票房/最高营收的”，它通常用于形容电影、音乐、游戏等领域的产品营收，同义词有：highest-grossing、highest-earning 等。看个例句：
Last year, the highest-grossing film in China was a patriotic action movie called “Wolf Warrior 2,” which raked in over $870 million.
去年，中国票房最高的电影是爱国动作片《战狼2》，该电影票房超过8.7亿美元。 
2）earn
The film earned $70.7 million (RMB502 million) between Friday and Sunday in China's Mainland, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. That put it far and away ahead of other Chinese new releases and Hollywood’s holdovers “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and “The Flash.”
Artisan Gateway咨询公司的数据显示，从周五到周日，《消失的她》在中国大陆的票房达到7,070万美元（人民币5.02亿），远远超过其他中国新片以及好莱坞的《变形金刚：超能勇士崛起》和《闪电侠》。
earn 这个词非常简单，表示“票房达...”，可以直接说「电影+earn+钱」，其中 earn 也可以用 make 替换，如：
Including Thursday takings, the film made a total of $98.3 million (RMB968 million).
加上周四的票房收入，该片总计达到了9830万美元（人民币9.68亿）。
我们在新闻中经常能听到“某电影票房达 XX 元，高居票房榜首”之类的话语，这时就可以套用文中句子：
The film earned.... That put it far and away ahead of other movies.
其中 put 可以用 place 替换，此处 place 是动词，表示“放置”，后面加序数词则表示“排名”，如：
Chinese romance film “Love Never Ends” was given a five-day opening run and placed second.
中国爱情片《我爱你！》开映五天，名列第二。
run 在这里是名词，表示“一段时期”，比如常见的 in the long run 长期来看，opening run 是“开映期”的意思。
placed second = be placed second，在句中和前面共用一个 was。
回到文中来，release 作动词是“发行”，这里是名词，表示“新发行的作品、新片”。
holdover 本是指政府换届后，留任的政府官员，也可比喻“遗留物、遗留影响”，如：
Her fear of dogs is a holdover from her childhood.
她害怕狗，那是儿时遗留下来的。
文中 Hollywood’s holdovers 指好莱坞的老片系列，和前面的 new releases 是一对反义词。
二、如何介绍电影情节？

“Lost in the Stars” is a Chinese adaptation of a 1990 Russian movie “A Trap for the Lonely Man,” which itself was adapted from a Robert Thomas stage play. 从本段中我们可以学到“改编自...”的两种说法：be an adaptation of 和 be adapted from.
表示“影片讲了...的故事”，可以说“The movie sees 主人公+who...”，通过 who 引导的定语从句，对人物和情节进行补充。
the search is running out of steam 中，steam 是“蒸汽”，在蒸汽时代，蒸汽是重要的动力，所以 run out of steam 表示“失去动力”，如：
I usually just let her yell until she runs out of steam.
我通常就任她叫喊，直到她喊累了为止。
它的反义词是 get/pick/gather/gain/build up steam，字面意思是获得蒸汽，即“逐渐加速、变得声势浩大”，可以搭配计划、活动、观念等，如：
The election campaign is picking up steam.
竞选活动在逐渐形成声势。
