Neurological manifestations in COVID‐19 caused by SARS‐CoV‐2
Abdul Mannan Baig. Full-text downloads: 15656 times
Neurological manifestations in COVID‐19. Fever with headaches (A) may occur early in COVID‐19 patients. Specific manifestations related to neurological deficits like loss of smell, taste, ataxia and convulsions have been reported in COVID‐19. The possible entry of SARS‐CoV‐2 to reach the brain via cribriform plate (B) or after systemic circulatory dissemination following infection of the lung (C), in early or late phases of COVID‐19 may result in loss of involuntary control of breathing resulting in acute respiratory insufficiency requiring assisted ventilation (D)

B Vitamins in the nervous system: Current knowledge of the biochemical modes of action and synergies of thiamine, pyridoxine, and cobalamin
Carlos Alberto Calderón‐OspinaMauricio Orlando Nava‐Mesa. Full-text  downloads:8172 times
Neurotropic B vitamins play crucial roles as coenzymes and beyond in the nervous system. Particularly vitamin B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), and B12 (cobalamin) contribute essentially to the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Their importance is highlighted by many neurological diseases related to deficiencies in one or more of these vitamins, but they can improve certain neurological conditions even without a (proven) deficiency. This review focuses on the most important biochemical mechanisms, how they are linked with neurological functions and what deficits arise from malfunctioning of these pathways.

Astrocyte morphology: Diversity, plasticity, and role in neurological diseases
Bin Zhou, Yun‐Xia Zuo, Ruo‐Tian Jiang. Full-text downloads: 3380 times
Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells in the central nervous system and participate in synaptic, circuit, and behavioral functions. We are beginning to understand how astrocyte structural plasticity contributes to brain functions. The change/loss of astrocyte morphology, traditionally known as a hallmark for reactive astrogliosis, is a common pathological feature in many neurological disorders. However, recent data suggest the fine structural deficits preceding reactive astrogliosis may drive disease progression. This review summarizes recent advances in astrocyte morphological diversity, plasticity, and disease‐related deficits.

Treatment of dementia and mild cognitive impairment with or without cerebrovascular disease: Expert consensus on the use of Ginkgo biloba extract, EGb 761®
Nagaendran Kandiah, Paulus Anam Ong, Turana Yuda et. alFull-text downloads: 3137 times
The Ginkgo biloba special extract, EGb 761® has been widely used in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
The Expert Group foresee an important role for EGb 761®, used alone or as an add‐on therapy, in the treatment of MCI and dementias, particularly when patients do not derive benefit from acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or NMDA antagonists. EGb 761® should be used in alignment with local clinical practice guidelines.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases and the potential countermeasure
Yan Wang, Erin Xu, Phillip R. Musich, Fang Lin. Full-text downloads: 2310 times
Mitochondria not only supply the energy for cell function, but also take part in cell signaling. This review describes the dysfunctions of mitochondria in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, and the signaling pathways leading to mitochondrial biogenesis (including PGC‐1 family proteins, SIRT1, AMPK) and mitophagy (parkin‐Pink1 pathway). Understanding the regulation of these mitochondrial pathways may be beneficial in finding pharmacological approaches or lifestyle changes (caloric restrict or exercise) to modulate mitochondrial biogenesis and/or to activate mitophagy for the removal of damaged mitochondria, thus reducing the onset and/or severity of neurodegenerative diseases.
