先看句子：
She climbed up to the top of the hill, 【from where】she could have a good view of the whole town.
有同学问我这里为啥是 from where，不是 from which？
这的确是个语法难点。
其实如果用 which，语法上好像也对，因为 which 的先行词是 the top of the hill。
如果是 where，where = 介词 + which，在这个案例中，where = on the top of the hill。
那么问题来了，from the top of the hill 和 from on the top of the hill 有何区别？

from on the top of the hill 其实是“双重介词”，from 和 on 的连用，描述的是“从山顶的位置进行俯瞰”，是一个方位的指代。
但如果用了from the top of the hill, 语法上没有问题，但是意思倾向于，从山顶尖尖的那个点开始发散出去，是一个非常具体和固定的点。
回到原句：
She climbed up to the top of the hill,【from where】she could have a good view of the whole town.
强调的是方位的指代，而不是非常具体和固定的点，所以 from where 要比 from which 更好。
PS: 关于“双重介词”，再来看一个例子：
She picked up several bigger eggs from within the box. （她从箱子里面挑选了几个较大的鸡蛋）
From within 就是“双重介词”，如果去掉 from，方位就不精确了，好像她待在那个盒子里似的，她其实是在盒子外挑鸡蛋对不。
