“Met Gala”

Asian American

"I can say 100 times I'm doing this because I want to inspire more young girls in sport. I'm doing this because I want to introduce kids to free skiing and I'm doing this to represent my and my mother's Chinese heritage,"

(The worst failure is to not try.")

Gu representing China to inspire girls
Reuters
Eileen Gu did not expect the level of controversy that resulted from her choosing to represent China rather than the United States at the Beijing Olympics, she said on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old Gu enjoyed a stellar Games this year, picking up gold medals in Big Air and halfpipe as well as a silver in slopestyle.
San Francisco-born Gu also faced controversy over her decision in 2019 to switch teams and represent China after years of competing for the U.S.
"There were so many amazing female role models in the U.S. that I grew up watching," Gu told an espnW Summit panel in New York City. "There wasn't someone like that in China."
Gu, who speaks fluent Mandarin and spent her summers in China but was raised in the U.S., said she was inspired to represent her mother's home country.
"I can say 100 times I'm doing this because I want to inspire more young girls in sport. I'm doing this because I want to introduce kids to free skiing and I'm doing this to represent my and my mother's Chinese heritage," Gu said.
"If people don't believe that and if they want to be like 'She's doing it for xyz', I can't do anything about that."
Chinese social media users suggested Gu enjoyed a privileged life.
"I'm trying my best to make the world a better place in my own way," said Gu.
"If you don't like this way - awesome, like you guys can go do something else."
Bound for Stanford University this year, Gu said she was enjoying the perks of her post-Olympic celebrity, attending New York's Met Gala on Monday, but that she has received hate mail and been the subject of online bullying.
"It's easy to just be like, 'Yeah, just don't care'," said Gu. "But God, like, I'm 18."
Ailing (Eileen) Gu: ‘The worst failure is to not try’
Olympics.com
Three-time Olympic freeski medallist Ailing (Eileen) Gu is back in the United States after an extended period of time in China, following her successful Beijing 2022 campaign.
The 18-year-old has had a busy week in New York, attending the Met Gala on Monday (2 May) and appearing on NBC's Today show.
Gu, who last February became the first-ever freeskier to take home three medals at one Games, reflected on her historic Olympic debut.
"The really standout moment for me was landing that 1620 in Big air which was my first event," she said.
"I've always said my message is about inspiring young girls and inspiring more people to hear about the sport and to use it as a force to create interconnection and cultural communication.
"I knew that it was such a big moment and so many people were watching. It was my time to live up to that standard that I've set. So in that sense I was like no matter what there is no failure because if I don’t land, the worst failure is to not try."
She added: "I wanted to try it, I'd never done it before, never even tried it on airbag or anything, landed it got it got that gold medal and was on top of the world."
China's two-time gold medallist at Beijing 2022 was also asked about her Olympic future.
"Who knows, honestly, I really love skiing still. It is a very personal and expressive part of me, and I think it makes me who I am. It's taught me resilience, its taught me cross cultural communication. So, in that sense I think, why not, but let’s see how school goes first."

Apex For Youth
