Q: Looking back on your Law journal experience, how did it help you in your subsequent professional studies or work?
In short, the work of editors is rather menial and JDs have taken more work compared with us LLMs. The senior JDs have been working on laying out the manuscripts for each colume. For example, how to arrange the number of papers among all issues in each colume, controlling the length of each paper in one issue, differentiating the manuscripts from public law topics to private law ones; these are all up to them. We are basically in charge of sorting out those manuscripts that consist with the requirements of each issue. I used to believe that foreign language publications did not require a high level of hotness in terms of topic selection, and that there were opportunities for cold topics. In reality, cold topics only get attention at certain times. The perspective of the chosen topics and the novelty of the headlines are both important. The requirements, in contrast with the perspective and novelty for domestic publications, will only be higher.
As to the meaning of this experience for my future work, it will help quite a lot for my future submission. I chose the teaching route and publication would be an important part in my coming years. I learned to think deeply about the preferences of a particular journal before I submitted my work, which would add the possibility of being selected. It also helped me with some specific skills of editing, such as reviewing a manuscript as fast as possible. It is unlikely for editors to spend too long on one manuscript. Focusing on some certain parts and getting the core idea of the author in a short time thus become an essential skill for editors, which I believe would help me in future too.
