第57期：Let the Cat out of the Bag
常爸和Mike视频会议结束，小小常过来打招呼：
Mike
Hello, Victor! How are you today?（你好，小小常。你今天怎么样？）
小小常
I am great! I am getting a new puppy today!（我今天特别开心！我要有一只小狗啦！）
常爸在一旁很是惊讶。
常爸
What?! How did you know about that? Who let the cat out of the bag?（你怎么知道的？是谁“把猫从袋子里放出来的”？）
小小常
No, Dad! I am getting a puppy, not a cat!（不对呀，爸爸！我要养的是一只小狗，不是小猫呀！）
Mike
Ha ha, no, Victor! Your dad wants to know who told you that! It was supposed to be a secret!（哈哈不是这样的，小小常！你爸爸想知道是谁告诉你小狗的事。他本来是想保密的！）
小小常
I heard my dad talking about it on the phone!（我听到爸爸打电话的时候说的！）
常爸
Oops! I guess I let the cat out of the bag! We can pick up your new puppy this evening!（哎呦！看来是我泄的密！那今晚我们就去接你的小狗吧！）
小小常
Hooray! I can't wait! Thanks, Daddy!（太棒了！我都等不及了！谢谢爸爸！）
所以，你猜到了吗？
let the cat out of the bag字面意思是“让猫从袋子里出来”，实际表示的是“泄露秘密”，而且通常指“无意间说出来”。
据说，这个短语源于古老的英格兰，当时出售活乳猪的商贩为了防止乳猪乱动和方便运输，就直接把乳猪装在麻袋里出售。有些不法商家会把流浪猫也装在袋子里充数，粗心的买主不打开麻袋检查就不会发现。但如果猫自己从口袋里钻了出来，这个骗局就暴露了。
后来，人们用let the cat out of the bag来表示“（无意中）泄漏秘密”。
让我们来看几个例子吧！
Don't blow it. It's a top secret. Don't take a risk in letting the cat out of the bag.
别搞砸了。这是最高机密。不要冒险走漏了风声。
She let the cat out of the bag and told us she was engaged last month.
她说漏了嘴，告诉我们她上个月已经订婚了。
Nobody knew she had been offered a good job until her husband let the cat out of the bag.
没人知道她得到了一份好工作，直到她丈夫不小心说漏了嘴。
除了let the cat out of the bag，还有一些其他用法也表示“泄密”这个意思。
✍reveal secrets 揭发秘密
reveal表示“显示，显露”；这个短语多指揭露一直隐藏或隐秘的东西。例如：
If such behavior does not break the law, as Lee claims,
李认为，如果这种泄密行为并未违反法律的话，
a company must clearly outline its rules
公司应该将“不泄密”清楚地写进公司的规定，
and require employees to sign agreements
并要求员工签订协议，
that they will not reveal secrets to future employers.
答应不会将公司的机密泄露给将来的雇主。
✍spill the beans泄漏秘密
spill the beans直译是洒落豌豆，实际表示泄露秘密，含有“泄密后破坏了计划或是破坏了准备给某人的惊喜”的意思。
例如：
Don't spill the beans. It's supposed to be a secret.
别说漏了嘴。这事只能你知我知！
✍blow the gaff 泄漏或暴露不愿意让人知道的事
gaff是一个意思很多的俚语单词，这里可以指胡言乱语、欺骗或恶作剧。blow the gaff 可以理解为“把欺骗、恶作剧踢飞，打翻”，它的后果可比let the cat out of the bag要严重，可能会给当事人带来麻烦。例如：
They killed Green because he was about to blow the gaff on their drug dealing.
他们杀死了格林，因为他要把他们贩毒的事情说出去。
