The Hare and the Tortoise
In a forest lived a hare. All he did was jumping up and down all day and talking about how great he was.
“I am so great because I can run so fast.”
He loved to talk about how much faster he was than all the other animals.
“I’m the fastest animal in the forest,” he boasted. “Does anyone wanna race me?”
The hare sure did run fast with his very big feet.
The other animals didn’t like the way the hare showed off, but they could never beat him in a race.
“We need to find an animal faster than the hare,” they all agreed, “so we can teach him a lesson.”
One day a tortoise was walking in the forest. He heard the stories about the hare and he thought, “I want to be the one to beat the hare in a race. I will teach him a lesson.”
So the tortoise went to find the other animals. “I will race the hare,” he told them.
The other animals all laughed. “Ha ha, you want to race the hare? But you’re the slowest animal in the forest! Not even the fastest animals can beat him. How can you win?”
“You will see,” replied the tortoise.
So the other animals took the tortoise to meet the hare. The hare was sitting in his favorite place under a tree eating a large carrot.
“Good morning, Mr. Hare. I hear that you’re the fastest animal in the forest.”
“That’s right,” answered the hare.
“Well then,” said the tortoise, “I wanna race you and see who is faster.”
The hare laughed so hard. “Ha ha ...” He dropped his carrot.
“Ha ha ha, are you serious? You could never beat me. But if you really wanna race, meet me tomorrow morning and we will see who is faster.”
The tortoise walked away very slowly while the hare continued to laugh. “Ha ha...”
The next morning all the animals came to see the race. The hare and the tortoise were both ready at the start line.
“Let’s get started,” shouted the hare. “I haven’t had my breakfast yet.”
The race started and the hare ran off into the distance as fast as an arrow.
The tortoise started to walk very slowly.
“Oh, dear,” thought all the animals watching the race. “The hare is going to win again.”
The hare ran for a while. Then he stopped and looked behind him. The tortoise was nowhere to be seen.
“Ha ha...” he laughed. “The tortoise won’t finish the race until tonight! I have lots of time to sit down and eat my breakfast.”
So the hare sat down and started eating a carrot.
The hare finished eating his carrot. But the tortoise was still nowhere to be seen.
“I’m a bit sleepy after breakfast,” he yawned. “The tortoise is so slow. I have lots of time for a quick sleep. I can still win the race when I wake up.”
So the hare closed his eyes soon and fell asleep.
The tortoise continued to walk very slowly. Finally, he saw the hare, who was still asleep under the tree.
The tortoise didn’t stop. He quietly walked passed the hare.
A while later, the hare woke up. “Hmm, I still can’t see the tortoise,” he thought. “Maybe he doesn’t wanna race any more. I should finish my race now.”
So he stood up and started running again.
But when he got to the finish line, the tortoise was already there!
All the other animals were very happy and cheering the tortoise. “Ha ha, slow and steady wins the race!” they all laughed, “slow and steady wins the race!”
“Oh, no,” cried the hare. “The tortoise beat me while I was asleep!” The hare was very sad.
The tortoise had a big smile on his face. Very slowly, he walked over to the hare.
“Mr. Hare, I won because I was wiser and ran the race seriously. If you are too confident and show off all the time, you will always lose in the end.”
“You’re right...” agreed the hare. “From now on I will stop showing off about being the fastest.”
“That’s good,” replied the tortoise. “Goodbye, Mr. Hare. I should go now. My home is a long way away.”
The tortoise walked away very slowly. The hare had learned his lesson. He never showed off again.
He lived a much happier life in the forest with all the other animals.

比如兔子大叫:“The tortoise beat me while I was asleep,”轻松就学会了“somebody beat somebody(谁打败了谁)这个过去式表达。
I should go now. My home is a long way away”,是不是有种淡然处之的人生智慧值得学习呢?
Belling the Cat(给猫系上铃铛)
Mercury and the Woodman(墨丘利与樵夫)
