When you are old and grey and full of sleep,

The poem When You Are Old by Yeats tops the list of my favorite English poems. The poem is so famous and touching that you’ll never forget it.

It is very famous. Irish poet William Butler Yeats is widely considered one of the greatest poets of the English language, and he even received the 1923 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Thanks to Yeats’ literary ability, the poem is incredibly touching. This is a love poem for Maude Gonne. When Yeats writes, “How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face” he tells the reader that love isn’t age dependent, that love is not reserved for the young, and that it becomes deeper and longer lasting with age.

Imagine that someone reads this poem to you and tells you he or she is the one who will still love you when you are old. I’m sure you wouldn’t be able to resist this poetic love.
