Yes. Aside from being fun, gap years are conducive to personal growth and philosophical enrichment.

This is firstly because they offer an excellent chance to explore your interests and the potential careers that align with them. A gap year that includes practical experience in a field that interests you can help you to focus on selecting a college major that suits your personality, interests and strengths. This will consequently save you time and money once you get to campus.

Secondly, the type of work experience — as well as volunteer and goodwill projects — that are typical of gap years are particularly great résumé builders and can result in increased focus and maturity, qualities that all competitive colleges like to see in prospective students.

The last reason is that you’ll learn important life lessons far earlier than others. After traveling the wider world in all its complexity and glory, you’ll understand there are bigger issues for humanity than a failed date night or a lost game of beer pong.
