Wang Ju has become an overnight sensation.
If you still don't know who she is, don't be surprised if you're called a juwairen — a homophone for "outsider" in Chinese.
More and more netizens are voting for this 26-year-old contestant in Tencent's Produce 101, an adaptation of a South Korean TV show of the same name that aims to select 11 women to form a new pop act.
Wang initially left the competition in its early stages, but seized an opportunity to return — only to become the butt of cruel jokes about her appearance.
Some said Wang is the opposite of what people expect from a member of girl group, as she isn't as young, slim, light-skinned or conventionally beautiful as other contestants.
However, in the program's later episodes, Wang has won the audience's support with her honesty, confidence, self-deprecating humor and eloquence.
When faced with veteran TV host Ma Dong, who was invited on the show as a special guest, she said: "I think of myself as someone with ability. So why should my ability be less attractive than the other girls' good looks?"
While canvassing for votes, she said: "Some people have said that I don't look the part for a girl group. But what is the standard? You have in your hands the power to redefine what it means to be China's No 1 girl group."
Her speech ignited viewers' passions.
Fans began canvassing for her, making GIFs and memes and coining new words using her given name Ju. They also spread slogans to persuade people to vote for Wang.
These images spread so quickly that Wang Ju becomes an overnight sensation on social media, leading some to start analyzing the logic behind it.

"Wang Ju not only represents the aesthetic of a small group of people, she also represents the possibility of overturning rigid aesthetic concepts," commented Tian Kele, a popular Zhihu user.
Some compared Wang's popularity with that of the 2005 winner of Super Girl, Li Yuchun, whose fans voted for in their droves. She went on to become a superstar.
Others said netizens were daydreaming if they thought they could redefine what it means to be a pop idol.
Such a heated and wide-ranging public debate on the subject has certainly benefitted the makers and sponsors of Produce 101, as well as any other involved parties.
Wang Ju used to be slimmer and more fair-skinned. When asked whether she wanted to look that way again, she said she would rather just be herself.
"You don't have to put a ring on me. I can buy my own. My life is in my own hands," she wrote in a song.
Yes! Beautiful or not, independence and confidence is more important. We hope that you all can be yourselves and live as you want to live!
Does she represent many people?
