Shining As Stars

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

1、Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence
not only...but also (also可以省略)是关联词语,意思是:不但…
e.g. Not only I but also Tom and Mary are fond of watching television.
(2)not only…but also连接的动词一般不重复,这与汉语不同。如:汉语说“我不仅懂英语,而且懂俄语”,英语则说“I know not only English but also Russian”而不说“I not only know English but also know Russian”
(3)Not only…but also中的also可以省略,但在连接句子时,有时也可见到省略but甚至but also的情形。
(but also的变体形式: a: 省去also,只留but;b: 省去but,只留also;c: but…as well;d: but also全部省略)
e.g. He is famous not only in China but (also) in the whole world.
(省去了also)
Not only was I tired, I was also cold.
(省去了but)
Not only is he a teacher, but he is also a poet.
Not only does she speak Spanish, (but) she also knows how to type.
2、Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you maybecome blameless and pure
e.g. Mr. Jones became headmaster last year.
Maple leaves become red in autumn.
He became better and better.
He became confused.
