SAT vs ACT : Which Test Is Best For You ?
College-bound high school students have a lot of important decisions to make. One of the first of these decisions will be whether to take the SAT, the ACT, or both. These tests analyze very different skill sets, so many students perform better on one test over the other. It's important to understand the differences between the SAT and the ACT in order to make the best choice.
Before we compare the two tests, let's examine some common myths about the SAT and the ACT.
Myth
Colleges prefer the SAT
Fact: In 2007, Harvey Mudd College, the last college that did not accept the ACT, announced that it was dropping its preference for the SAT. Today, all four-year colleges and universities accept either the SAT or the ACT with no preference for one test over the other.
Myth
You have to be good at science to do well on the ACT
Fact: Although the ACT has a science section and the SAT does not, the ACT's science section primarily tests a student's ability to analyze data or tables – not a student's prior science knowledge.
Myth
The ACT is easier than the SAT
Fact: The ACT and the SAT test different skill sets. Some students naturally perform better on one test over the other, and other students earn similar scores on both tests.
Myth
The ACT is shorter than the SAT
Fact: Although the ACT is shorter in terms of time (3 hours and 25 minutes for the entire ACT versus 3 hours and 45 minutes for the SAT), the ACT contains more questions than the SAT!
In general, the SAT is slower-paced but requires stronger critical thinking skills. The ACT, on the other hand, is very fast paced but more straight forward than the SAT. Which test is best for you? Read on to learn more !
