Chill本身是（使）冷却，（使）变冷的意思，英语中常用cold, heat来比喻情绪。
越冷，表示情绪越冷静、越理性；越热，表示情绪越激动、越狂热。

放松休闲、打发时间
Chill和chill out可是口语中表达打发时间的高频词哦！大家还记得Avril Lavigne当年的冠军歌complicated里面唱的chill out what cha yelling for吗？
chill和chill out词义与hang out相似，相当于relax among friends，意即“和朋友们聚在一起放松休闲、打发时间，例如：

chill out也可翻译为

“I have been studying all day!! I need to chill out! Let’s watch a movie!”
(我学习了一整天！我需要放松一下！我们去看场电影吧！)
Chill和chill out还有另一种说法就是chillax[tʃɪ'læks]，例如：
I just wanna chillax tonight.(我今晚只想休息)
calm down
别着急，冷静
Chill和chill out还有一个意思就是别着急，冷静，与calm down相似，例如：
1、“I can’t find my sunglasses! Where are they?”(我找不到我的太阳眼镜了！去哪儿了啊？) 
2、“chill out, they are on your head!”(别着急，它们就在你的头上)；
3、“OMG! I’m so nervous for the exam!(要考试了，好紧张啊!) 
4、“chill out, you’ll do fine”（别着急，你肯定会考好的）

另外有关于chill的其他用法还有chilly(冷)
oh, it’s chilly outside！这么冷的天跑到室外很有可能会catch a chill哦。
catch a chill更多的表示感冒是由天气而引起的;
have/catch a cold则可以表示通过他人感染。

关于chill的相关短语：Chilled to the bone(感到寒气刺骨).
Many people in the south were chilled to the bone last week.（许多南方人上周冷成狗了…湿冷伤不起啊）
