#English Study#Vocabulary of Election: Suffrage.  Suffrage means the right to vote in political elections. Suffrage is usually associated with women’s suffrage in the United States. After decades of protest, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted U.S. women the right to vote, was ratified in 1920. Though the 19th Amendment makes it illegal to deny the right to vote to any citizen based on their sex, many women of color, immigrant women and poorer women continued to face barriers at the polls.  It wasn’t until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which forbids states from imposing discriminatory restrictions on who can vote, that all women, regardless of race, were able to vote. Here is an example: “The Seneca Falls convention was the first time a group of people formally gathered to discuss women’s suffrage. ”
