本次活动系哥大亚裔教授协会获奖者讲座系列，也是哥大全球中心“比较视角看中国”系列讲座之一，邀请艾明如教授分享其新书的研究发现，随后展开互动式问答，与会者有机会和艾教授深入探讨该书的观点和影响。

Mae M. Ngai is Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and Professor of History, and Codirector of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (2018-2023) at Columbia University. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1998 and taught at the University of Chicago before returning to Columbia in 2007. She is a U.S. legal and political historian interested in questions of immigration, citizenship, and nationalism. Ngai is author of the award-winning Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America (2004); The Lucky Ones: One Family and the Extraordinary Invention of Chinese America (2010); The Chinese Question: The Gold Rushes and Global Politics (2021), which won the 2022 Bancroft Prize and was a finalist for the LA Times book prize in history and shortlisted for the Cundill Prize; and is editor of Corky Lee's Asian America: Fifty Years of Photographic Justice (2024).

This distinguished history of the Chinese diaspora and global capitalism chronicles how a feverish alchemy of race and money brought Chinese people to the West and reshaped the nineteenth-century world. Drawing on ten years of research across five continents, prize-winning historian Mae Ngai narrates the story of the thousands of Chinese who left their homeland in pursuit of gold, and how they formed communities and organizations to help navigate their perilous new world. Out of their encounters with whites, and the emigrants' assertion of autonomy and humanity, arose the pernicious western myth of the "coolie" laborer, a racist stereotype used to drive anti-Chinese sentiment.

By the turn of the twentieth century, the United States and the British Empire had answered "the Chinese Question" with laws that excluded Chinese people from immigration and citizenship. Ngai explains how this happened and argues that Chinese exclusion was not extraneous to the emergent global economy but an integral part of it. The Chinese Question masterfully links important themes in world history and economics, from Europe's subjugation of China to the rise of the international gold standard and the invention of racist, anti-Chinese stereotypes that persist to this day.

韩亦苹现为哥伦比亚大学医学中心终身正教授、美国微生物科学院院士。她常年致力于研究口腔致病菌和人体的相互作用，在早产、死胎和癌症研究方面取得了突破，率先提出了“移动的微生物”的学说，阐明口腔菌可以侵入身体其他部位引起疾病。作为核梭菌研究的先驱，韩亦苹教授带领其团队建立了多个核梭致病的动物模型，报道了首例口腔菌引起的早产和首例核梭菌引起的死胎，并且率先报道了核梭菌刺激大肠癌的机制。

Yiping W. Han is a tenured professor of microbial sciences with an interdisciplinary appointment at Columbia University Medical Center and the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. Her research has been consistently funded by the NIH and involves the role of microbes in human health and disease. Her research interests include microbiome, host-pathogen interactions, oral-systemic connection, cancer biology, and reproductive sciences. The human microbiome is a vast population of microbes that play an essential role in health and disease. Her laboratory is focused on the following aspects: (i) investigating the role of oral bacteria in extra-oral infection and inflammation; (ii) investigating the mechanisms of Fusobacterium nucleatum pathogenesis in pregnancy complications and gastrointestinal cancers; and (iii) developing genetic tools for mutant construction in bacteria.
