在3月7日的两会记者会上，中共中央政治局委员、外交部长王毅提到了一位外籍记者，“我看到一位外国记者表示：中国是一个将不可能变为可能的地方，讲述中国故事不只是他的一项工作，更是终生的使命”。

王毅引用的这句话，出自中国日报美籍记者聂子瑞（Erik Nilsson）2022年的一段演讲。作为中国日报“新时代斯诺工作室”的核心成员之一，他在题为《向世界讲述真实的中国》的演讲中回忆了他在中国的种种“没想到”和深挖中国故事的报道经历。
China is a place where "never ever" can come true.
被王毅提及，聂子瑞倍感荣幸且深受鼓舞：“我觉得王毅外长今天的话是对我过去工作的认可，也是对像我这样的外籍记者的鼓励。”
"I'm truly honored. I feel that Foreign Minister Wang Yi's words today are a recognition of the work to which I have devoted my life, but also is a call for me and other such international journalists to do even more," says Erik Nilsson, an American reporter who has been covering stories in China for 18 years.
他表示：“我刚来中国的时候从没想过将来有一天自己能被中国外交部长提到，这又是一件中国将不可能变成可能的事。”
"Having Minister Wang Yi reference my words is something I, as an individual never, ever imagined when I first came to China but it proves again the country is a place where the unimaginable can come true."

对聂子瑞而言，讲述中国故事这一使命在这个充满动荡和误解的时代，显得更加重要：“探索中国、讲述中国故事是我的梦想，现在可以说是梦想成真了。在将来，我还会坚持探索和创新，继续讲好中国故事。”
For him, telling China's true story to the world is not only a job or even a career but a life mission. "The mission has become all the more important amid global volatility and the greater risks of misunderstandings among countries, including my homeland by birth, the United States, and my adopted home, of China."
报道中国18年，他曾说，中国就像是一颗洋葱，剥掉一层，还有一层，你终其一生，也永远了解不完。
“中国像颗洋葱，一生也了解不完”
聂子瑞高中就梦想成为一名记者。2005年，正在读书的他得到了来中国日报社实习的机会。
而那时的他却发现，自己对中国了解得太少。
Once I arrived in China, a whole new world opened to me, very different from what I imagined.
我刚到中国的时候，新世界的大门向我打开，跟想象中完全不一样。
During the internship, I came to realize that there is a lot about China that I did not know. What I also came to realize was that China is somewhat like an onion. In a sense there are layers upon layers upon layers. You take one layer off, and you realize there is another layer. You can use your whole life, and never get to the middle.
实习期间，我意识到自己对中国了解太少。中国就像是一颗洋葱，一层又一层，你剥掉一层，还有一层。你终其一生，也永远了解不完。
聂子瑞本以为他会在中国待一年就走，但让他没想到的是，那之后他再也没有离开。
一年后，他正式来到《中国日报》工作。
2008年汶川大地震，聂子瑞深入灾区采访15次，在震区的时间长达8个月，时间跨度从2008年到2013年。他见证了在这个生命消逝的地方，人们重拾希望。

如今，聂子瑞还记得那个震后山河破碎的家园，他说，震区与他见过的任何地方都不一样，满目疮痍宛如战区。
但他最后一次去时，却发现重建的家园甚至比震前更先进，更完善：
One of the people I spoke to pointed out that the quake was a tragedy, he estimated it may take 10 years or more to develop, but they compressed it into 5.
我采访的一个人说，地震是巨大的天灾，大概需要10年才能完成重建，但中国只用了5年就完成了。

The rest of the world may not understand very well in terms of what China actually achieved over there. I think very few countries could, while you have such a tremendous tragedy take place, and have such a reconstruction that would provide so much hope.

世界可能并不能完全理解中国究竟创造了怎样的奇迹。我想，没有哪些国家，能在这场巨大的悲剧发生后，如此快速地完成重建，给人民带来希望。
在汶川报道的同时，聂子瑞还和几位志同道合的朋友成立了一个志愿团队，为灾区做各种他们力所能及的工作。
“孩子们爆发欢呼，我的心也欢呼起来”
2011年，一位来自青海的校长跟聂子瑞说，他们学校没有通电，但两块太阳能板，大约一万块钱，就能解决这个问题。他问聂子瑞能否帮助他们，他当场就答应了：
如果只要买一块太阳能板，就能给孩子们带来光明，为什么不呢？
If you buy a solar panel, you can literally bring light to hundreds of children. And also frankly, after what I have seen in Wenchuan, I wanted to see how this world could be better.
而他也直言，这种“让世界变得更好”的信心，正是来自他亲眼见证的汶川灾后重建。
And I do believe that the world is getting better. How horrible it (Wenchuan) was, and how much better it became, that was absolutely incredible and that was the time when I started believing in China.
我真的相信世界正在变得更好。汶川那时候那样糟，但现在却那样好。这简直令人难以置信，那时候我开始真的相信中国。
2011年7月，经历飞机、火车、崎岖的高原山路，聂子瑞来到了青海省曲麻莱县叶格乡，他看到了将近80个孩子挤在7顶帐篷里。在那里，聂子瑞和当地的老师一起装好了太阳能板。
太阳能板装好，光明第一次来到了孩子们的帐篷里，所有的孩子们都欢呼起来。在他的《太阳升起——“美国小哥”见证中国扶贫奇迹》一书中，聂子瑞写道：
“灯第一次亮起来时，孩子们爆发出一阵欢呼。我的心也欢呼起来。”
之后，他为分布在玉树曲麻莱县的几乎所有学校安装了太阳能板，为数千名孩子的教室和宿舍带去了电力。
聂子瑞还记得他收到过孩子们的一件“礼物”，让他非常触动：
One time we put up a solar panel at the school, a girl came up to me, and she said "look, I don't really have anything to give you, aside from this.” She presented a sling shot that she'd made. 
他们在一所学校装太阳能板，一个女孩走到我面前，她拿出自己做的一根弹弓给我，她说我没有别的东西可以给你，只能用这根弹弓表示我的感谢。
从2011年到2019年，聂子瑞和他的志愿团队多次往返于北京和青海，巨变也悄然发生。
从2013年开始，中国开始了精准扶贫计划，青海省曲麻莱县作为三江发源地，更是精准扶贫的重中之重。学校天翻地覆的变化让聂子瑞以为自己走错了地方。

聂子瑞说，中国真的把扶贫当成了重中之重。或许其他国家的人很难理解，即便在疫情来袭之际，中国也从未放弃扶贫事业。
“到沙漠去，到山区去
到中国人民中去”
成为记者的十几年，聂子瑞走遍了中国大陆的每一个省份。
在接受采访时，聂子瑞说，一些西方媒体对中国的报道是不准确的。他有幸来到了中国，才得以了解真实的中国。
If I never came to China, I absolutely would not be able to understand. First of all, there wouldn't be the resources to understand it because there are times the Western media are not so accurate in terms of how it portrays China. So I would not have access to that. 
如果我不来中国，我对中国绝对不会有现在这样的理解。首先，我不会有资源和渠道去了解，因为一些西方媒体对中国的报道是不准确的，那我便不能了解中国。
他还说了非常让人触动的一番话，“到地震的废墟中去，到沙漠去，到山区去，到中国人民中去。”
It's just about being there, on the ground, in the ruins of the quake, actually up on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, going around the country, going to the deserts, going to the mountains, going to the forests, and engaging with the communities, face-to-face, first-hand, on the ground. I would not have these opportunities if I stayed in the US.
要真正到中国去，到地震的废墟中去，到青藏高原上去，走遍中国每一个角落，到沙漠去，到山区去，到森林去，到中国人民中去。和人们面对面，拿到一手资料，到现场去。如果我待在美国，那么我不会有这样的机会。
聂子瑞还将自己在中国的十几年经历都写在《太阳升起》一书中，这本书的稿费全部捐给了青海有需要的牧民家庭。
在“中国政府友谊奖”的官方认可之外，聂子瑞早已与中国人民建立了深厚的感情。几年前，在得知聂子瑞家人生病时，青海牧民集体为他家人祈福。
聂子瑞曾带家人一起去过青藏高原，除了他，他的家人都有严重的高原反应。他说，也许上辈子，他是一头牦牛。
在微博上，很多网友在评论区对聂子瑞的付出表示感谢，谢谢他让世界看到一个真实的中国。

正如王毅在记者会上所言：“我们欢迎更多外国朋友一起来讲述活力满满、热气腾腾的中国故事，讲述中国同各国携手构建人类命运共同体的故事。”
