前两天的文章评论区有读者提到了一个问题：what kind of XX和what kinds of XX在提问时有什么区别？
这是一个比较容易搞混的问题。具体来说，what kind of XX和what kinds of XX在语法上都是正确的，不过意思上有一些细微的区别。
What kind of后面通常接不可数名词或者可数名词单数，表示“哪一种”，比如：What kind of house do you live in? 你住的房子是哪一种？
而What kinds of后面通常接不可数名词或者可数名词复数，表示“哪几种”，比如：What kinds of books do you like to read? 你喜欢读哪些种类的图书？
提问的时候用what kind of还是what kinds of要看语境。如果你希望对方给出的回答是单数，那么就用what kind of，复数则用what kinds of。
举个例子，usnews.com上面有一篇指导人们如何购车的文章，里面的小标题是：What Kind of Car Do You Want? 以及 What Kind of Car Do You Need?
这是因为买车的人通常只考虑某一类型的车（比如跑车、轿车或者SUV），只需要用名词单数。
另一篇外媒文章则有这样的句子：
France is one of Europe’s largest countries and one of the world’s largest makers of automobiles. But what kinds of cars do the French drive?
文章讨论的是法国人都开什么车，因为法国人开的车涉及到各种类型，所以提问用是what kinds of cars 
此外，如果what kind of后面接的是可数名词，有时候还会有what kind of a XX这样的用法。比如《韦氏高阶英语词典》的例句：What kind of (a) car do you drive?” “The same kind you drive.”
那么加不加a有什么区别吗？陈用仪在《英语常用词疑难用法手册》里面提到，如果名词前加a，那么侧重于强调事物内在的性质，没有a则强调事物的分类。
举个例子，What kind of a motorcycle is it? 询问的是摩托车的性能和质量，而What kind of motorcycle is it? 询问的是摩托车的品牌。
又比如：What kind of a lawyer is he? 询问的是律师能力的高低，而What kind of lawyer is he? 询问的是律师的类别，比如知识产权律师或者刑事律师等。
另外，如果kind of前面有many, all, these这几个修饰词，kind of要用复数，写成many/all/these kinds of XX。比如：She reads all kinds of books.
