Xiamen to host key tech start-up projects

The Xiamen Science City last week hosted the grand finale of the inaugural Su Song Cup Future Industry Technology Innovation Competition. The event featured more than 50 finalists.
The city of Xiamen sponsored the competition, which was organized by the city's Science and Technology Bureau. Event representatives said that the competition is designed to attract cutting-edge technology start-ups from around the world to Xiamen.
The competition focused on six industries prioritized by Xiamen: semiconductors, future networks, strategic materials, hydrogen energy and storage, genetics and biotechnology and deep sea and space exploration.
It has established satellite competitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Xian. Since its launch in August this year, the competition has attracted more than 300 projects from a dozen countries such as Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
XM's Zhongshan road earns national Model Pedestrian Street designation

China's Commerce ministry recently released its third batch of eight National Model Pedestrian Streets, including Xiamen's Zhongshan road. A major renovation of Zhongshan road began in June 2020 and concluded earlier this year.
Xiamen accelerates construction of key provincial projects

Xiamen's Development and Reform Commission noted last week that the city's construction plans include 130 key provincial projects with a planned annual investment of more than 82 billion yuan. From January through October, the city completed an investment of 80 billion yuan, achieving 97.5 percent of the annual plan and exceeding initial plans by 14.2 percentage points.
Covid-19 vaccine variant with XBB antigen becomes available in Xiamen

Local official announced last week that a new variant of a covid-19 vaccine that contains XBB antigen components is now available in Xiamen by appointment for eligible recipients. The XBB omicron subvariant is believed to be the currently predominant covid-19 variant in China. Health experts recommend that key populations receive the updated vaccines.
Siming announces plans for a new public fitness center

Siming officials recently released a detailed summary of its upcoming fitness center and senior services complex. The project includes a total investment of approximately 731.7 million yuan. The facility is expected to open in February 2025. Project officials said that the complex will combine fitness, senior services and parking facilities. The project covers a construction area of almost 88,000 square meters and a land area topping 23,400 square meters.
Box girder for Xiamen Cross-East Sea Channel project rotated into place

Construction workers recently rotated into place the north extension section of the Xiamen Cross-East Sea Channel project. The extension crosses over the Fuzhou-Xiamen High-Speed Railway. The 44,000-ton box girder is 196 meters long and 35 meters wide. The bridge deck area is equivalent to 16 standard basketball courts. 
The box girder includes what is believed to be the heaviest and longest T-shaped concrete rotating beam in the world among projects of its kind. The final rotation angle is fixed at 85 degrees.
Second phase of subway system's Line Two earns Luban Prize

The China Construction Industry Association recently announced that it selected the second phase of Line Two of Xiamen's subway system for the second edition of its 2022-2023 Luban Prize. The awards recognize national high-quality projects in the world of the construction industry. Line Two is one of three rail transit projects in China to receive the Luban Prize.
Xiamen accelerates new cruise homeport upgrade

Port authorities announced the acceleration of the upgrade and renovation project for its cruise homeport. The centerpiece of the project is a new cruise terminal with a construction area of 68,000 square meters. The terminal is slated to open in the middle of 2024. Port officials said the terminal will improve clearance efficiency by more than 50 percent and create an enhanced waiting area.
Since the resumption of international cruises from Xiamen Port, a total of 12 cruises departing from Xiamen have accommodated more than 18,000 inbound and outbound passengers.
Xiamen debuts its first community waste sorting public service center

Xiamen's first community waste sorting public service center officially opened in the Gaolin residential area. Community staff said that more than 200 people participated in waste recycling within five days of the center's launch. The center has collected more than 1,200 kilograms of recyclables.
XMU production of The Goldbach Conjecture graces Beijing stage

The Taihu Theater of the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing last month hosted a performance of The Goldbach Conjecture, an original drama created by artists from Xiamen University. The performance was part of a collection of performances for a gathering of thousands of teachers and students from 14 universities.
The Goldbach Conjecture is based on the life of the mathematician Chen Jingrun. The play centers on his life at Xiamen University and as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. 
Xiamen Jiageng Theater set to host Anna Karenina musical
《安娜·卡列尼娜》即将在厦上演
The Xiamen Jiageng Theater will host a trio of performances of the Russian musical Anna Karenina from December 15 through December 17. Adapted from the Alexander Tolstoy's epic novel, the musical has long been a favorite of audiences worldwide. The production currently visiting Xiamen was created over several years by a creative team included Yuli Kim as well as multiple recipients of the Golden Mask Award, a theatrical award in Russia for productions in all genres of theatrical art.
With over 40 musical compositions and more than 200 costumes, the performance brings the era of 19th-century Russia to the stage, portraying the characters' lives and the ambiance of Russia.
Xiamen releases plan to reduce port and shipping pollution
厦门发布方案促进本港航运绿色低碳转型
Xiamen last month issued a three-year action plan that aims to promote the green and low-carbon transformation of Xiamen's port and shipping industry.
The plan focuses on three major tasks. It highlights the transformation of new energy sources for ships within the port, the provision of ships at the port with new energy sources and clean energy support and an enhancement of the port's capacity to process ship pollutants.
Pair of local projects earn China Human Habitat Environment Prize
厦门两项目拟获2023年中国人居环境奖
China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development recently announced that two Xiamen projects earned this year's China Human Habitat Environment Prize. The local selections included the Xiamen Mountains-to-Sea Trail (Yunhai and Linhai lines) and the Yangtang Residential Area Affordable Housing Project.
