CMU
Winter Wellness Resources

This academic year, Carnegie Mellon launched several new initiatives to support students’ health and well-being. First, CMU’s Community Health and Well-Being (CHWB) unit launched its new website, which pulls together resources for undergraduate and graduate students and all members of the CMU community. As our community’s health and well-being does not have any singular home or point of contact, the resources and information throughout the site are sourced from all over the Carnegie Mellon community. In addition to resources, the site shares how to make a variety of health and wellness appointments, compiles well-being spaces on and around campus, and highlights well-being events and the many ways to connect and thrive at CMU.

Along with its new online presence, CHWB expanded its services in partnership with Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS) to launch the new mental health virtual platform TimelyCare. As a telehealth service providing mental health care for students free of charge both in the US and internationally, TimelyCare adds a range of options to the already robust scope of care provided by CaPS. By downloading the TimelyCare app, students can access four different services:
  • TalkNow is a 24/7 on-demand service that allows students to access a mental health professional when extra support is needed.
  • Students may access scheduled ongoing counseling appointments with a wide range of providers with different identities and clinical specialties.
  • Through Health Coaching, students can meet with licensed providers for exercise, nutrition and sleep advice, as well as to discuss other ways to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
  • The app also provides group activities including yoga, mindfulness and meditation.

Another new resource for the CMU community is an easier way to report concerns and request help for a student through the CMU Cares Form. Any member of the CMU community, including students or family members, can use this form if they know of a CMU student in need of support or assistance due to behavioral, mental health and/or well-being concerns. Information submitted on the form will be reviewed by Student Affairs professionals who will assess needs and follow up with the student to engage with the appropriate resources.
Extra Support
The winter months can be a time where students notice changes in their mental health or mood. Support from friends and family is critical for coping with the stresses of daily life that all students experience. Family members can often detect more quickly than others, including students themselves, that signs of stress have turned into signs of distress. Keeping communication lines open is important as is awareness of resources that might be needed. Changes in behavior, mood or functioning lasting more than two weeks, withdrawal from others and activities, expressions of hopelessness or being overwhelmed and disruptions in sleep and/or appetite are all signs that a student may need to seek additional support. Students are more likely to seek that extra help with the encouragement of friends and family they trust.
