US News 2022-23 美国大学排名刚刚公布，今天，美国媒体、各大学社交媒体就被排名结果刷屏了。
真应了那句话，关于排名，大学校长们都是：
Dismiss them publicly; obsess about them privately. 对外讲排名不重要，而私下里心心念念都是排名。
今年排名，TOP 学校变化不多：
变化最大之一，哥伦比亚大学，从去年的排名第 2，直降到第 18，再次成为焦点。
就在新排名公布之前，上周五 9 月 9 日，哥大学校长 Mary Boyce 宣布，基于今年 2 月本校数学教授 Michael Thaddeus 提出的质疑，学校已经投入大量时间，对排名数据及其收集流程进行深入调查。
调查结论为：
On two of the metrics questioned by our faculty member, class size and faculty with terminal degrees, we determined we had previously relied on outdated and/or incorrect methodologies. We have changed those methodologies for current and future data submissions, as reflected in the newly posted Common Data Sets.
在课堂人数、全职教师拥有终极学位这两个数据上，学校采用了过时以及/或者错误的方法。学校已经对此进行修正，更新数据发布在新的 Common Data Sets（以后简称 CDS）。
课堂人数 -
In some cases, class size data was previously reported incorrectly and not in compliance with the U.S. News instructions. While many of Columbia’s undergraduate classes have long had under 20 students, the prior methodologies used resulted in overreporting the number of classes with under 20 students and underreporting of classes with between 20 and 29 students.
在某些课程上，原来的数据和计算方式有误，与 U.S. News 要求不符。夸大了人数少于 20 人的班级数，少报了人数在 20-29 内的班级数。
现已经按照 CDS 要求修正。更新数据为：在 2021 年秋季，57% 本科班级人数少于 20， 74% 少于 25，77% 少于30。
全职教师拥有终极学位比例 -
哥大对于该数据的定义，与 CDS 不符，导致数据夸大。现已经严格按照 CDS 要求修正，更新数据为：全职教师拥有终极学位占比 95.3%。
对这两个数据错误，学校表示歉意：
..anything less than complete accuracy in the data that we report -- regardless of the size or the reason -- is inconsistent with the standards of excellence to which Columbia holds itself. We deeply regret the deficiencies in our prior reporting and are committed to doing better.
就在 U.S. News 排名公布之前，哥大发布了更新之后的 CDS 数据。
今年 2 月，哥大数学教授 Michael Thaddeus 提出多项质疑。他指出，top-tier 一流大学在排名中一般波动不大。极少数或有少许提升。但还没有像哥大这样，从 1988 年刚加入排名时的第 18 位，一年之后跃到第 8，2021 年大幅跨越到第 2。
今年 6 月，哥大宣布对排名数据和收集流程进行调查，暂不为 U.S. News 最佳大学本科排名提供数据。
U.S. News 曾就 2021 年秋季数据对哥大发出多次询问。因一直没有收到学校答复，今年 7 月，U.S. News 从去年发布的 2022 大学排名中把哥大移除，列为 Unranked。
有意思的是，在刚刚发布的 2023 美国大学排名中，哥大重回排名榜。只不过，这次，重新回到 1988 年的第 18 名。这是近 20 年来，哥大第一次掉出前 10 名之外。
对此，U.S. News 解释说：
We are not confident in the accuracy of the data Columbia submitted and did not use any prior year data.
For the 2022-2023 rankings, Columbia’s rank was calculated with data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, data from the peer assessment survey conducted by U.S. News, the College Scorecard and assigned competitive set values for data where no third-party data exists. Based on those data sets, Columbia ranks No. 18 in national universities.
由于对哥大数据缺乏信心，我们没有采用哥大提供的往年数据。2022-23 排名，是根据美国教育部统计数据、U.S. News 同行评价、College Scorecard 等其他数据来源。综合这些数据，哥大在美国大学中排名第 18。
U.S. News 为 11,500 所大学、数以千计独立项目发布最佳排名。每年有大约 0.1% 的学校出现数据问题。但像哥大这样曾位居第 2 的历史悠久著名藤校出现问题，确实非常少见。
尽管哥大为修正数据作出努力，并宣布不为 2022-23 U.S. News 排名提供数据，U.S.News 仍然发布了这个排名上的大幅落差，再次让哥大成为舆论焦点。
两个发布时间如此接近，似乎暗示着，各方试图协调到最后一分钟的多场拉锯战。
拥有赫赫百余年历史的哥伦比亚大学，还是否值得申请？倾听后续分解。
