Reseach by Curiosity-Driven Scientists Is Good Science
Welcome to the second biannual Beijing Brain Conference (BBC).

BBC is sponsored by the Chinese Institute for Brain Research, Beijing (CIBR,Beijing)and other neuroscience institutes in Beijing.

CIBR has been established for 4 years, with 32 laboratories and 8 technical platforms. Their research areas span from molecular, cellular to systems levels, with cross-disciplinary interactions encouraged. CIBR has more than 100 graduate students and scores of postdoctoral fellows, active at the frontiers of neuroscience research.

While there is much noise about application, application, application, or diseases, diseases and diseases, CIBR firmly believes

1) that curiosity-driven, investigator-initiated, carefully executed and in-depth analysed research will remain the mainstream of good science, and the core of neuroscience and life sciences.

2) while big data has made important contributions to some disciplines of sciences such as artificial intelligence, that research consuming large amounts of funds and driven by data has never played a significant role in our understanding of the brain, or in improving either the diagnosis or treatment of brain related diseases. In fact, so far, even in the more broad life sciences, data-driven research consuming large amounts of funds has, at most, played a marginal role.
We should not be enticed by funds and should pursue the right, elegant and creative research that will lead to discoveries advancing our understanding of the brain and related diseases.

History will judge those who are greedy for money under the pretence of science. Data produced by much funding with little analysis is garbage and those who grab money without scientifically valuable discoveries are not  fundamentally different from criminals.
