Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Electrochemist Postdoctoral Researcher to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will conduct research in the area of high temperature electrolysis (HTE) solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) development, in The Solid Oxide Fuel-Cell Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. You will work to analyze and improve operation of LBNL’s metal-supported (MS-SOEC) technology in SOEC mode. Primary focus points will be infiltrated catalyst composition and processing, cell architecture optimization, Cr-suppression coatings, cell processing, and cell/materials response to the SOEC environment. You will also operate and diagnose conventional electrode-supported SOECs. Primary focus points will be dynamic operation (cycling of power, steam content, etc.) and development of accelerated stress test (AST) protocols. These activities will include cell fabrication and testing with controlled humidity, post-mortem analysis, and diagnosis of performance-limiting and durability-limiting phenomena. The research is conducted in collaboration with industrial and academic partners, and as such will be fast-paced and goal-driven, with the possibility of high visibility and commercialization of successfully developed technology. You will also interact with the Energy Conversion Group focused on understanding fuel-cell phenomena and components.

● Fabricate and test button-cell MS-SOECs.

● Test button-cell SOECs.

● Conduct post-mortem analysis to determine degradation modes.

● Review literature and identify opportunities to apply state-of-the-art SOFC/SOEC research to MS-SOECs and AST development.

● Conceive and execute research that is novel and can lead to high impact.

● Work as part of a team to execute projects.

● Interface with research stakeholders from industry, academia, and national laboratories.

● Provide ideas, suggestions, and guidance to colleagues.

● Bring research to fruition, resulting in presentations at meetings, publications in journals, or patents.

● Work on meeting milestones and reporting them to project sponsors.

● Adhere with ETA and EH&S safety guidelines.

● Travel to conferences and project management meetings.

● Interact with the LBNL electrochemistry community (with extensive experience in batteries, modeling of batteries and fuel cells, electrode material synthesis, spectroscopy, and cell design) to aid in electrochemistry research.

● Recent PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science or related field.

● Strong publication/patent record.

● Excellent hands-on research skills and mechanical aptitude.

● Experience with SOFC or SOEC research and related techniques and analysis.

● Ability and willingness to work in a team environment.  

● Strong communication skills, both written and oral. 

● Ability to produce research deliverables on a scheduled timeline of milestones.

● Self-motivated and able to work independently.

● Ability to learn rapidly and integrate new skills.

● Willingness to take ownership of all experimental aspects of a project.

● Knowledge of metal-supported SOFCs.

● Knowledge of infiltrated catalysts.

● Knowledge of SOEC electrolysis operation.
