哭了出来
在今年的纽约市普通高中的录取上，民主党亚当斯政府玩起了“抽签”的把戏，
——把择优录取的录取制度变成了“抽签”的暗箱操作把戏。
参看我之前的文章：

后来我们在6月17日与6月26日举行了两次抗议示威集会，
在集会上许多8年级的学生控诉：
他/她们的一代移民父母英文不好，生活艰难，但辛勤工作，从小给他/她们创造好的读书环境，他/她们也励志努力读书，用知识来改变命运。
他/她们的平均成绩95分~97分，但是在他/她们的12个申请的学校中，竟然一个也没有录取他/她们。
而几位学生家长讲着讲着，都快哭出来了。
任重道远
我对家长与学生们的悲愤深表理解。

坚持维护择优录取，坚决反对因为政治目的而暗箱操作，这是我们的保守主义理念所决定的。

这也是为什么我们很多前辈们在自己的小孩已经考上特殊高中，并没有直接利益相关的情况下，却仍然站出来，为这些不幸被剥夺了入学机会的学生与家长发出声音的缘故。

然而，当前的民主党亚当斯政府没有任何意愿去听这些学生与家长的声音，它们推进这个“抽签”的做法，根本原因是因为政治利益。
——通过这种暗箱操作，牺牲华人学生的利益，满足特定族群的利益，以实现亚当斯上台时的选票承诺。

这场反对亚当斯抽签入学政策的抗争，注定是要任重道远。

——就象我们之前保护特殊高中考试SHSAT一样，经过了长久4年的抗争。

在华人整体投票意愿，投票率，公民比例都偏低的情况下，并且对美国的两党政治认识还停留在【官老爷】的原始程度的情况下，

是无法迫使
民主党亚当斯政府
主动去更改这种【抽签入学】的政策。

只有更广泛地教育、启蒙、宣传，只有一而再，再而三地抗争+投票，才有可能改变这个荒谬的政策。

加州旧金山今年做了一个非常好的榜样，
他们通过投票，特别是当地华人的参与投票，成功地罢免了极左的学区教育委员会委员。

在这样的压力下，6月22日，旧金山教育委员会以4：3的投票结果通过了重启洛威尔高中择优录取制度的提议。
洛威尔高中在2020年被改为抽签入学，2023年秋季将重回择优录取。

经过了2年的抗争，最终用选票才真正迫使它们改变回来。
所以，对于纽约市的普通高中入学录取的改变，我们也将继续抗争。
——我们将会继续举办抗议示威，但需要有很多很多的家长学生们出来参与，如果每次都只有百把人，民主党亚当斯政府完全可以把我们当成空气。
——今年2022年是关于纽约州的中期选举，明年2023年是市议会的选举，这2个选举都非常重要，将直接体现民意——特别是体现华人的政治理解、政治参与、政治智慧，将直接影响对民主党亚当斯政府的压力与否。
特许学校
但有句老话：远水解不了近渴。
抗争与投票固然决不能停止，但当下的学生家长们的权益有没有挽救的机会？

向大家介绍过特许学校。

特许学校（Charter School）是接受政府资助但独立于公立学校系统（Public School System）运作的学校。
特许学校往往是由州政府立法允许的，“公家给钱、民办运营”的免费学校。
在学校的运营管理、教育课程的设置等方面，特许学校有着非常高的灵活性，基本上不太受到公立学校系统的例行性教育行政规定约束，有很大的自主权。
在这里，纽约同源会（
CACAGNY
）向大家推荐一个新的选择，一个学生与家长在遭受
民主党亚当斯政府
的暗箱操作而权益受损后的新的选择。

——可以考虑 Vertex，一所新的特许高中。
第一个 Vertex Partnership Academies 特许高中校区将于 2022 年在布朗克斯区开放。
每位学生将能选择：
(1) 国际学士学位文凭课程，
(2) 国际学士学位职业计划，

Vertex学校信息
Vertex 位于Beach大道1160 号，毗邻 Blessed Sacrament 天主教堂，位于布朗士区 Soundview 区一个安静的住宅区。

作为一所新学校，Vertex 目前没有可展示的标准化考试成绩。

Vertex Partnership Academies seeks to be the first-of-its-kind network of character-based, International Baccalaureate public charter high schools dedicated to equality of opportunity, individual dignity, and our common humanity. 
Vertex student scholars will be immersed in a culture of democratic discourse guided by the four cardinal virtues of Courage, Justice, Wisdom, and Temperance. The first Vertex Partnership Academies campus will open in the Bronx in 2022.   
Each scholar will be empowered to choose either: 
(1) the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program that prepares them to enroll and thrive in premier colleges and universities in the country or abroad; 
or (2) the International Baccalaureate Careers Program that prepares them to enter the labor market with an industry credential and the professional skills and knowledge in a particular industry sector.
CACAGNY to Chinese Parents: Consider Vertex, a New Charter High School
Following our very well-received webinar with Success Academy Charter Schools for elementary school parents, CACAGNY would like to bring to the attention of our families a new, innovative charter high school: Vertex Partnership Academies. This school should be interesting to families still looking for a spot after the high school admissions fiasco this year.
  • Procedures: this is for entering 9th grade this fall only. Application is open now, with spots filled on a first-come first-serve basis; application closes once all spots are filled. To apply, click the Apply button on the top right corner of Vertex’s website. The application form is quite simple. (Like all public charter schools, Vertex is free to families.)
  • Vertex will be located in an attractive, just-renovated building at 1160 Beach Avenue, next to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, on a quiet residential block in the Soundview section of the Bronx. The school is just minutes’ walk away from the St. Lawrence station of the 6 train.
  • As a new school, Vertex doesn’t have standardized test scores to show. Many students will come from Brilla College Prep, Boys Prep (New York), Girl's Prep (New York), and Girl's Prep (Bronx). These charter middle schools have similar test scores as the Sun Yat Sen MS 131 in Chinatown and MS 819 in Tompkins Square, to name some neighborhood middle schools that might be familiar to our Manhattan parents.
  • What makes Vertex quite distinctive, and attractive, for a non-Specialized High School, is that all Vertex students participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. IB curricula are rigorous, offered and recognized in many countries, standardized, and supervised by the IB Organization in Switzerland.
  • Vertex students take the core IB curricula in grades 9 and 10. After that, two pathways are available. The college preparatory pathway follows the IB Diploma curriculum, which culminates in college-level courses while in high school. Like the Advanced Placement (AP) program, against which it is often compared, IB Diploma is highly regarded by colleges, and many colleges reward high IB examination scores with college course credit. (Incidentally, Vertex plans to offer Mandarin as a foreign language option.)
  • The other pathway, another distinctive and exciting Vertex feature, offers the IB Careers Related curriculum, which weaves coursework with industry internships and applicable certifications. Vertex plans to develop four areas of concentration: (1) computer and information technology, (2) media, music and video production, (3) healthcare and medical services, and (4) construction and engineering. The goal is to be ready for the job market after Vertex.
Vertex is offering two open houses, for families to visit the school location, ask questions, and get help filling the application. The open houses are from 10AM to noon on Saturday July 2, and Saturday July 9, at the school’s address given above. The flyer is attached. It is recommended, but not required, to attend an open house before or after you apply.
CACAGNY has also arranged with Vertex to hold a Zoom webinar on Wednesday July 6 at 6:30PM, with questions-and-answers following. The presentation will be in English, while the question-and-answer will have a Mandarin-speaking interpreter. Instructions for registration to the webinar will come later.

We hope that adding Vertex, with its unique features, to the options available to our families will help them navigate our fast deteriorating and increasingly absurd public school system.
