In former years when summer approach-ed in the Northern Hemisphere,people would bask under the sun and splashed around in the ocean. Generally, people will honor our oceans with World Oceans Day. But what is World Oceans Day exactly? This annual holiday aims to remind people all around the world of how important it is to protect our major oceans.

往年，当北半球的夏季来临时，人们肯定会在阳光下晒太阳，在海洋中嬉戏。一般来说，人们会以世界海洋日来纪念海洋。但世界海洋日究竟是什么？这个一年一度的节日旨在提醒全世界，保护我们的海洋是多么重要。

The origin of World Oceans Day

It all began 30 years ago in 1992 in Canada with the International Centre of Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada. The concept of World Oceans Day was first proposed by the UN in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

世界海洋日始于30年前的1992年，由加拿大国际海洋开发中心和加拿大海洋研究所共同发起。1992年，联合国在里约热内卢举行的地球峰会上首次提出了世界海洋日的概念。

Since 2002, the World Ocean Network has been building support for ocean awareness events on June 8 with the help of sponsorship from UNESCO' sIntergovernmental Oceanographic Comm-ission.On December 5, 2008, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to designate this day.

自2002年以来，“世界海洋网络”在教科文组织政府间海洋学委员会的赞助下，于每年的6月8日为海洋意识活动提供了支持。2008年12月5日，联合国大会通过决议指定这一天为世界海洋日。

According to National Day Calendar, the first World Oceans Day's objectives were to move oceans off the sidelines to the center of discussion. The site also points out the human need for the oceans with the providing of food, making of oxygen, weather impacts, purification of water that evaporates and falls as rain, and provides the basis for a large number of medicines.

据国庆日历报刊网站，第一个世界海洋日旨在将海洋从边缘问题转移到中心讨论问题。该网站还指出了人类对海洋的需求，包括海洋能够提供食物，制造氧气，天气影响，净化蒸发和提供降雨，并为大量药物提供了基础。

World Oceans Day is celebrated with special events at aquariums, zoos, with beach cleanups, education programs and sea food events amongst many others.

The significance

According to the UN, oceans produce about 50 percent of the planet’s oxygen and are home to earth’s biodiversity. It is the main source of protein for over 1 billion people in the world. By 2030, about 40 million people will earn a living by being employed in ocean-based indust-ries. Over 70 percent of the globe is covered with water.

联合国数据显示，海洋生产了地球50%的氧气，是地球生物多样性的家。它是全世界范围内超过10亿的人口的主要蛋白质来源。到2030年，约4000万人通过从事海洋产业内的相关职业谋生。全球70%以上的地区被水覆盖。

Oceans also absorb nearly 30 percent of carbon dioxide produced by humans, which helps in mitigating global warming.Playing a key role in the Earth’s climate and weather systems, as well as in the global carbon cycle, the ocean is an immeasurable force of nature.

海洋吸收了人类产生的近30%的二氧化碳，这有助于减缓全球变暖。海洋在地球气候和天气系统以及全球碳循环中发挥着关键作用，是一种不可估量的自然力量。

However, over the years, oceans had to witness 90 percent depletion of big fish populations and 50 percent destruction of coral reefs due to reckless human activities.World Oceans Day is observed as a reminder every year of the destruction caused by human activities like garbage and sewage disposal and oil leaks.

然而多年来，人类不计后果的活动使海洋大型鱼类数量减少了90%，50%的珊瑚礁遭到破坏。纪念世界海洋日是为了提醒人们注意到垃圾、污水处理和石油泄漏等人类活动所导致的海洋破坏。

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness among people about the “impact of human actions on the ocean” and to mobilise citizens for their sustainable management.The day's yearly commemoration serves as a reminder that, despite all of the benefits that the ocean provides, it is now in need of assistance, and people from all over the world will have to step forward and do their part to conserve the oceans.

这个纪念日的意义是使人们提高对“人类活动对海洋的影响”的认识，并针对可持续管理动员大众。这一天的纪念活动提醒人们，尽管海洋提供了各种益处，但它现在需要协助。世界各地的人们必须站出来，为保护海洋尽自己的一份力量。

2. Use environment friendly materials

Marine debris has quickly grown into one of the biggest threats to the ocean and its various creatures. 8 million tons of plastic are dumped in the ocean every year. You can use reusable bags，avoid plastic packaging or a stainless steel bottle.
