The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is a unique and dynamic place that preserves the stories of new Americans in New York City.  Founded in 1988 by historian Ruth Abram and social activist Anita Jacobson, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum explores the uniquely American story of immigration and the rich, diverse landscape it continues to create. In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Shanghai American Center invites you to join us on a virtual tour to see the home and explore the story of the Wongs, a Chinese American family who lived at 103 Orchard Street in the 1970s. Learn how they made a home in this vibrant and storied New York neighborhood and how their experiences reflect the growth of Chinese communities and the garment industry in the wake of changing immigration laws. Come learn how the museum demonstrates that, as a nation shaped by immigration, America’s brightest hope for the future lies in the lessons of the past.
