Social Justice Awards 2022 Spring

You did an excellent job describing the diverse manifestations of gender inequality in history and the mechanisms by which such inequalities were constructed as a result of prejudices. In this regard it was quite sharp of you to point out how Roman sculptures reflected the gender biases of their society and how the Romans used those artifacts to perpetuate those biases in the future generations.

Art

First Prize

Jiaying Fang The Hill School
“This response to the quote ONE IS NOT BORN, BUT RATHER BECOMES, A WOMAN shows a great understanding of the author's intention. The written response really emphasizes on the eagerness of women wanting to gain equal right and the painting really expresses that desperation through the pulling strings and hand movement. I love that the drawing, while depicting the social issue, remains abstracted and not representational. A good piece of art doesn't need all the details and nuances but one piece of gem to draw our eyes onto. ”
Jing Guo
Architectural Designer, Photographer, Pianist, Columbia University
Grace Zhang YK Pao School
"The hand-painting ability is well developed, the composition of the picture is very tense, and the facial annotations express a clear concept. Both paintings have a strong sense of the future, which makes me think about whether it is a real woman or a perfect artifact, which is intriguing."
Simin Qiu

Daiwei Wang Xiamen Foreign Language School
"The series of artwork “TOXIC ORANGE” is truly interesting and unique. The artist uses sport news as background to reveal gender inequality in sports field. Each piece is like an absurd story, which criticizes man-made “gender equality” in patriarchal society. Both the content and form of artwork are creative. The composition and the colors of artwork have high artistic quality."

Speech

First Prize

Sophia Xu Overseas Chinese Academy of Chiway Suzhou
"What makes this a truly excellent speech is the elegance of the argument. It takes a simple fact and connects that fact to a great many issues. There is much to be said for reducing a complex world to a short and powerful argument. The speech is well organized, well research and well delivered. It is an outstanding job of creating an argument that is perfectly suited to the time available."
Richard Lesicko
Director of Forensics, Prof. of Communication
Macalester College

Second Prize

Chou Tzu-Yu Shanghai American School Pudong
"The speech is outstanding on a number of different levels. The speaker’s delivery is exemplary, her message is elegantly phrased, and the speech demonstrates considerable skill is wrestling with a topic that has a high degree of difficulty. She does a fine job of taking a rather complex bit of philosophical wisdom and crafting her insights into a very approachable piece of practical wisdom."
Richard Lesicko
Director of Forensics, Prof. of Communication
Macalester College

Third Prize

Xinyu Cui Canadian International School Kunshan
"The speaker does a fine job of dealing with the time constraints and making sure that she has sufficient time to discuss the idea that social mediais a double-edged sword. She makes use of a wide variety of proofs to establish her position (drawing from her own life, making use of concrete examples) to weave together a powerful piece of analysis."
