AAPI
May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultures, history, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). AAPI encompasses all the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad majorly by Chinese immigrants on May 10, 1869.

AAPI Book Poster.
Advisor: Lin Yang
Do you love to read books? Do you enjoy drawing and designing? Do you think you can create a vibrant poster promoting the AAPI books to your fellow peers? Well, we are looking for you! Books bring us together and play a significant role in our life. They say that “When you open a book, you open a new world.” We invite students from grades 1-8 to display their artistic and creative expression by designing a poster for the following topic: Introducing AAPI themed books.
The goal of this topic is to showcase and celebrate our AAPI history, culture, and contributions. Books such as “A Kid’s Guide to Asian American History” and “Respecting the Contributions of Asian Americans” are two examples for young children. For more books, please refer to last year’s AAPI bookmark design which compiles a list of 184 AAPI books at different reading levels or you are welcome to select books of your own. We encourage students to submit original poster designs that help raise awareness of the AAPI heritage month and open up the conversation on AAPI topics using various methods of communication, design and messaging.
In May 2021, Belmont Chinese American Association(BCAA) donated 200 AAPI books to Belmont Public School to meet schools’ teaching needs. Books that are featured in the selected poster this year will be considered to donate to Belmont Public School Library.
Entries can be done in your media of choice (digital art, markers, colored pencils, etc), but must be original and created by the student(s). Students may work individually or in teams.
The competition is on, so get ready, get set, and get creative!

Asian American Athletes.
Advisor: Hong Zhang
Have you ever felt like “I am on a path that no one has walked before”? If you did, you are not alone. 37 years ago, 18-year-old figure skater Tiffany Chin stood atop the podium and became the nation’s first Asian American figure skating champion. Inspired by Tiffany Chin, 7 years later in Albertville, France, 20-year-old Kristi Yamaguchi became the first Asian American woman to win gold at the Winter Olympics. They inspired and carved a path for generations of Asian American figure skaters: Michelle Kwan, a two-time Olympic medalist, and five-time world champion; Nathan Chen, the first Asian American man to earn an Olympic gold medal in figure skating singles and three-time World champion; Vincent Zhou, an Olympic men’s team event silver medalist, Karen Chen and Madison Chock, Olympic women’s team event silver medalists and Alysa Liu, two-time U.S. champion.
Come and join us as we celebrate the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Heritage Month. We invite you to choose 3~4 Asian American athletes who inspired you and create a poster to showcase their vision, achievement, courage, strength, creativity, perseverance, resilience, or passion. Be creative, find your own way to engage and captivate our elementary-age audience and introduce them to un-stereotypical, diverse, and dynamic aspects of our AAPI culture and history.

Asian American Animators.
Advisor: Ning Ma
On October 25, 2018, Google Doodle honored Tyrus Wong (1910-2016), a Chinese American artist who would have been 108 on that day. Wong created many iconic images for Disney films, such as the classic movie Bambi. Wong’s art fuses the best of the East and the West, yet his achievements remained recognized until 2001 when he was named a “Disney Legend.” Like Wong, many talented Asian American artists from the past to the present have worked magic behind America’s favorite cartoons and animated films. The Korean American animator Jennifer Yuh Nelson, for instance, is the creative mind behind the Kungfu Panda series. The recent Netflix hit Over the Moon, which retells the Chinese myth about the moon goddess, was overseen by the Chinese American producer Peilin Chou. Here we invite you to celebrate Asian American animators and the wonders they create. You’re welcome to use the resources below or search for information on your own. Take inspiration from the animators you honor and add your own magic touch!

Asian American
Groundbreaking Contributions.
Advisor: Rui Renee Guo
In 1763, a group of Filipinos migrated and settled in St. Malo, Louisiana, forming one of the earliest and first documented Asian American communities in North America. Ever since then, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have made countless significant contributions to the nation, most never made into textbooks.
From atomic science to disease cures to influential technology, Asian American innovators have made huge impacts on people's lives. As we proudly celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, we invite you to create a graphically rich poster highlighting 3 to 4 Asian American Groundbreaking Contributions in science and technology.
Be creative and original with your design! Try using lots of photos and graphics, along with short and sweet text introductions, to catch the curious eyes and minds of young elementary students. Most importantly, have fun and be proud!
