Aerial photos reveal how the high-rises created lines resembling an electronic barcode. Eachbuilding was different from the next, creating a vibration of modern architecture. Its location in the heart of the harbor, where the shapesand materials are reflected in the sea, has transformed this high-riserow into symbol of a thriving city.
A-lab won the competition to design the master plan for Barcode inthe spring of 2003, in partnership with Dutch MVRDV and Norwegianarchitects DARK. As the senior coordinators of the master plan, itwas natural for A-lab to design the first and the last building, as wellas one of the buildings in between, to ensure the quality of the final result.
When arriving in Oslo from the east, The Wedge is the first building you see. The advantage of being on the end of the row was that the eastern façade had a full view of the Middelalderparken park.

The meeting rooms were placed on the exterior, almost as if they had grown out of the wall. The famous New York style steel staircases function as emergency exits and balconies. Not only did these design measures free up space for the office areas, but they also gave the building its iconic look. The meeting rooms jut out from the facade, signaling that this is an active and happening city.

Brick was a deliberate material choice for the facade. Not only does it contrast with the rest of Barcode, but it also establishes a link to the earlier settlements in the Middelalderparken park. we made the walls protrude way over the rooftop. We did the same thing with the windows to create gaps that resemble arrow-slits.As a result, the building features a spectacular roof terrace that is sheltered behind ‘arrow slits’ and can be used to hold different kinds of activities from social parties to private meetings.

The Wedge has a special appeal to students whose major is architecture. There is something about this lean brick building that leads students to not only observe the structure, but contact A-lab to get drawings, study its construction, and conduct their own analyses.
The choice of brick type and mortar would be crucial to create the intended look of the building. In addition to careful studies of the classic New York brownstones, the designers also conducted a field trip in Oslo to observe historic and modern masonry techniques and materials. Normally, all works of laying the bricks should be laid on site, even over the window sills. That would entail literally laying one brick at a time and then, putting up formwork and reinforcements on top. In this case, architects had a prefabricated brick beam that was placed on the cheeks, which bricks were then laid on top of.

To create the illusion of boxes shooting out of the facade, there was a desire for brickwork to be visible on the undersides of the boxes. Bricks are laid on top of each other and glued together with mortar. This means that bricks can not be laid horizontally into thin air. The solution devised here was to make prefabricated ceiling slabs on concrete with half-sized bricks. A steel bracket was designed for the brick girder and the bricks for the side walling were then laid on top. It was important that the steel bracket would be invisible under the brick girder, to cover them completely to make it look as if the bricks were mortared together in the corners.
Looking at the west wall facing the rest of Barcode, certain angles will give the impression that there are no window panes. It looks as if there are only holes in the brick wall, much like the arrow slits on the roof. By retracting the windows and setting them in a brick frame without visible molding, the bricks become an active part of the interior.

The 13 residential and office buildings in Barcode provide the Norwegian capital office spaces for 10,000 workers and 400 new homes in a new neighborhood with a distinctive character. The one building still standing tall, greeting everyone arriving to the capital from the east, is The Wedge. Its simplified design never ceases to impress.
