“We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love…these are what we stay alive for.”
In the Hollywood movie Dead Poets Society, it is said: “We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love…these are what we stay alive for.”
Poems and human part of an integrated whole. Poems are an essential part of what it means to be human. It is we humans who need poems, not the other way around.
The online poetry-reading campaign A Bite of American Poetry released by U.S. Consulate General Wuhan in mid-August has been warmly received by our online audience.
