实验室与岗位职责介绍
Dr. Na Zhangis an assistant professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (the largest and most academically diverse college) at the University of Connecticut. The University of Connecticut (UConn) is a public land-grant research (R1) university founded in 1881. The main campus is in Storrs and there are 4 regional campuses (Hartford, Waterbury, Stamford, and Avery Point) as well as the UConn Law and UConn Health; all UConn campuses operate within one system.
The Department of HDFS focuses its research, teaching, and public engagement on a multidisciplinary understanding of 1) healthy development and wellbeing of individuals and families over the lifespan, 2) interactions and processes within families, and 3) individuals and families in societal and cultural contexts. The Department offers its program in Storrs, Stamford, Hartford, and Waterbury. The Early Childhood Specialization Program runs at the main and Stamford campuses, providing researchers and students an opportunity to work with children. The Department of HDFS is home to the following centers: 1) Child Development Laboratories, which serves as a model demonstration laboratory center, with the goals to provide a site for research in child development and a place for university students to work with young children; 2) Center for Applied Research in Human Development, which partners with state and federal agencies, non-profits, human service providers, and educators to implement interventions to prevent and reduce problems faced by families and communities; 3) Center for the Study of Culture, Health, and Human Development, which facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration, training, and outreach related to human development and health in cultural context; and 4) The Rohner Center for the Study of Interpersonal Acceptance and Rejection, which is devoted to understanding interpersonal relationships, especially parent-child relationships and intimate adult relationship.
Dr. Zhang hopes to accept a new HDFS Ph.D. student for matriculation in Fall 2022. The deadline for application is December 15th. As a family scientist and prevention researcher, she mentors students in three specialization areas: Child and Adolescent Development; Couples, Parents, and Families; Health, Wellbeing, and Prevention. Her work is interdisciplinary, spanning across developmental psychology, clinical psychology, cognitive/affective sciences, psychophysiology, and neuroscience. Her Ph.D. student will have opportunities to be involved in her research projects that aim to leverage mindfulness to promote effective parenting and prevent children’s mental health problems in high-risk families such as divorced families, parentally bereaved families, and military families. The student will work on her independent project that focuses on mindfulness, mental health, and multigenerational relations. This ongoing research project focuses on family relations and the mental health of grandparents, parents, and children. The student will gain research experiences in study design, data collection, recruitment, data analyses, manuscript preparation, conference presentation, and publication. Moreover, she is the Principal Investigator of a 5-year grant proposal, which is currently being reviewed by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The project will test adding digital mindfulness strategies to enhance an existing online evidence-based parenting intervention designed for divorced families. Finally, if interested, the student will have access to large longitudinal (up to 26 years follow-up) multi-method datasets collected from randomized controlled trials of family-based interventions through her collaboration with collaborators.

Dr. Zhang's general research interests are the following:

Dr. Zhang's primary work location is the Stamford campus, located in downtown Stamford. Stamford is the fastest growing city in Connecticut, located only 40 miles away from New York City (45 minutes by train to Grand Central Station). The student’s graduate courses are offered in Storrs (our main campus), which is in the rural region of Connecticut, about 1 hour 45 minutes by car from Stamford. Connecticut is one of the most beautiful states in the United States. It has easy access to Massachusetts, New York, and Washington DC. You will enjoy the beach, parks, natural life, and diverse culture.
