Do you want to apply to and successfully enroll in well-known universities such as Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford, the University of California, and more? If your answer is "yes", then you need to understand what the personality traits of students they want are. "Leadership" is described as one of the most common traits they require students to have.
For example this is shown by their application essay questions; one of the personal insight questions from the University of California is to "describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time."
An UC admissions officer mentioned that they want to use leadership-related personal insight questions to ask if a student had an experience in which they stepped up and led, as well as what he or she learned from the experience.
Can the student reflect on one or two examples to show impact, in their lives or the lives of others?
This matches up perfectly with the purpose of JuniorCoach. The volunteers in JuniorCoach can not only enhance their leadership,  but also influence and help elementary and middle school students learn different skills and enrich their knowledge of the world. In addition to improving academic performance through our teaching, students become more willing to participate in and try different new activities!
In summary, we can use essay prompts from universities to think about how to make long-term preparations for applying to schools. If you want to develop leadership, JuniorCoach is your best opportunity! JuniorCoach is a student-led 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since its establishment in 2018, it has provided a volunteer service platform for young volunteers around the world. It has so far provided more than 15,000 hours of volunteer teaching, in fields including academics, art, sports, etc. It has been forming a very positive influence on local communities!
If you are thinking about joining us, you can learn more about JuniorCoach through the following JuniorCoach seniors' leadership stories about how they exercise their leadership, grow themselves, and influence others in JuniorCoach:
Mike Liu (President)-
As president of JuniorCoach, I often have to read proposals that intend to modify JunioCoach. In doing so, I have the authority to suggest revisions and offer my thoughts, therefore modifying the proposal. Also, I offer input and suggestions to other functions within JuniorCoach, such as a messaging group where such suggestions are made.
Tina Xu (Co-President)-
I was one of the first members to join the JuniorCoach Golf Association. I joined because of my passion for golf and my interest in volunteering to teach little kids. I became the South Bay Area president at the end of my sophomore year and recruited volunteer coaches and reached out to more students. Now our entire organization has more than 800 members and 10000+ hours of teaching. During the process, I learned how to communicate with little kids from ages 5-13 and their parents. From being a junior coach to a chapter president, to now a co-president as a senior, responsibility, initiatives, and patience became key characteristics that I gained, and that will benefit me in all aspects of my life.
Zihan Xu (VP of External Affairs)-
Leadership means guiding and working with a team to accomplish a goal, no matter small or big, and to make the process as smooth and easy as possible. I am the VP of External Affair in JuniorCoach, and my responsibilities are managing our YouTube channel, advertising on various social platforms, and coming up with promotional plans. I learned a lot from this leadership experience, especially the skills to assign work accordingly and set a reasonable deadline. At first, I threw the work to my team all at once, and the frustration obstructed their passion. I soon realized this problem and broke the projects into several small chunks and set a deadline for each chunk. The plan worked out. I believe this leadership experience would add value to my college application besides improving me personally. During the application filling out process, I found many colleges asked for your leadership experience.
Weiyu Lin (VP of Technology)-
I am an academic tutor, the vice president of technology, and the Texas chapter president of JuniorCoach. I joined JuniorCoach in 2018 as a golf coach. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, I changed my role to an academic tutor. After that, I became the Texas chapter president and recruited several tutors and students. Now, I am also the vice president of technology. I handled 2 engineering clubs, 1 reading club myself before. Now I trained some other tutors and helped them make and handle their club. I think that a great way to develop leadership skills is to take on more responsibility. You don't have to take on more than you can handle, but you do need to do more than simply what's covered in your imagination if you want to grow. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the only way you will learn anything new, and doing so will improve your leadership.
We can definitely say that on the JuniorCoach platform, you can become a one-on-one tutor, create a series of courses based on your specialties, set up your branch, or find your younger friends to join as teaching assistants and lead them to become tutors. As long as you have enthusiasm, our platform will always support you! We welcome students in the 7th grade and above to join us as our volunteers, cultivate your leadership skills for a long time, and make full preparations for applying to well-known universities!
