Plastic subcortical sound encoding underlying music pitch perception
Presenter: Dr. Xiaochen Zhang
Subcortical auditory nuclei contribute to pitch perception, but how subcortical sound encoding is related to pitch processing for music perception remains unclear. It is conventionally believed that enhanced and/or more stable subcortical sound encoding is associated with better pitch discrimination. However, associations between the context-dependent plasticity of subcortical sound encoding and superior auditory perception are also documented. In this work, we explored the subcortical neural correlates to music pitch perception and found that the context-dependent plasticity and the strength of subcortical encoding of musical sounds are independently and perhaps specifically associated with pitch perception for music melodies. This work expands the knowledge on the functional roles of early-stage auditory processing at the subcortical level and may inspire further investigations on the plasticity of subcortical sound encoding and/or music perception.
Bio
Dr. Xiaochan Zhang obtained his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 2019. He is currently an assistant research fellow at the PHI group, Shanghai Mental Health Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. His research interest includes auditory and visual processing and their interplay with emotional and cognitive processes among healthy and psychopathic humans.
