挪威女子手球队公开曝光，运动员们拒绝穿比基尼短裤，居然被国际手球联合会罚款，这立刻令舆论一片哗然！
近几十年来，女运动员多次公开反对制服的双重标准。在田径、沙滩排球和网球等运动项目中，女性被要求穿更暴露的服装。
先科普一下，下面这种长袖长裤的健美衣，英文叫
unitard
：


而这种露大腿的紧身衣，英文叫 leotard：
目前奥运会多个项目，如体操、跳水，运动员都被要求穿这种 leotard，抗拒这种规则的，都已经在预选赛（qualifying rounds）被刷掉了。
《纽约时报》的这篇文章正是讨论这一话题，这篇文章无论在思辨还是语言，难度都很高，几乎达到了 GRE 的水平。
我们今天就拿出一段分析一下：
The #MeToo and social justice movements have made equity and inclusion clarion calls of the moment, and that extends to what we wear to express ourselves and the concept of uniformity — which may be less a relevant idea than an antiquated interpretation of the social contract, one defined by a historic power structure that was almost always male, and almost always white.
大家一遍能否看懂？
上面这个段落实际上就一句话...
分界点就在于第一个逗号后的 and，我们先看 and 前面一句：
① The #MeToo and social justice movements have made equity and inclusion clarion calls of the moment
这句话的主语是 The #MeToo and social justice movements（MeToo 运动和其他社会公平的运动）
谓语动词是 made，这是个使役动词，结构通常是 make 宾语+宾补，表示“使…如何”，而此处的宾语就是 equity and inclusion（平等和包容），宾补是 clarion calls of the moment（当下的时代感召）。
所以 ① 整句话的意思是：MeToo运动和其他倡导社会公平的运动，让公平和包容成为当下的时代感召。
再来看 and 后面的句子
② that extends to what we wear to express ourselves and the concept of uniformity 
主语 that 指代上文提到的这些运动，extends to是谓语，表示“延伸到了”，what we wear to express ourselves and the concept of uniformity 是一个 what 引导的名词性从句，表示“我们穿什么才能表达自我和对一致性的理解”。
换句话说，社会上的那些倡导公平的运动也延伸到了我们的穿着上。
再来看后面，③— which may be less a relevant idea than an antiquated interpretation of the social contract, 
这里的 which 引导了一个非限定性定语从句，表示“倡导公平的运动延伸到穿衣领域”这件事情，may be less…than…这个句型我们之前讲过，表示“与其说…不如说…”。
比如 He is less a teacher than an artist.（与其说他是个老师还不如说他是位艺术家）。
回到原句：which may be less a relevant idea than an antiquated interpretation of the social contract（与其说它是一个相关概念，不如说是对社会契约的一种过时解释）。
后面还跟了一个“同位语+后置定语”的结构：
④ one defined by a historic power structure that was almost always male, and almost always white.
这个 one 是跟前面“an antiquated interpretation of the social contract”（对社会契约的一种过时解释）的同位语，说这种解释是被“a historic power structure”（历史权力结构）所定义，而这种“历史权力结构”几乎被男性白人所占据。
最后我们把整个段落（句子）的层次划分一下：
<The #MeToo and social justice movements>（主） <have made>（谓）< equity and inclusion>（宾） <clarion calls of the moment>（宾补）, and（连） that（主）< extends to>（谓）< what we wear to express ourselves and the concept of uniformity>（宾从） — 【which may be less a relevant idea than an antiquated interpretation of the social contract, [one defined by a historic power structure <that was almost always male, and almost always white>（定从）]（同位语）】(非限定性定从）.
翻译一下：
MeToo 运动和其他倡导社会公正的运动，让公平和包容成为当下的号角，这也延伸到了穿衣的领域：我们穿什么才能表达自己和对一致性的理解——与其说它是一个相关概念，不如说是对社会契约的一种过时解释，而在定义这种契约的历史权力结构里，几乎总是男性，几乎总是白人。
这个段落的含义以及语言能全部理解，那么你的水平基本上已经到达了托福、雅思、GRE 水平，可以说水平相当高了。
