Mental Imagery: Philosophical Challenges and Contributions to Cognitive Neuroscience
Presenter: Prof. Nevia Dolcini
The capacity for mental imagery, that is, the human ability to undergo a quasi-perceptual experience in the absence of any corresponding visual or auditory object or event, is regarded as one of the most unique human cognitive capacities. Mental imagery plays a role in the subjects’ echoes or reconstructions of their past experiences, as well as in anticipating future experiences and scenarios. Moreover, mental imagery appears to be involved in a variety of cognitive functions, including memory, motivation, emotion, thought processes (visuo-spatial reasoning, creative thought, decision making, etc.), and language. For these reasons, mental imagery is currently a hot topic in all the research areas studying human mind and cognition. How and to what extent perception and mental imagery are distinct cognitive capacities? What are their intrinsic relations/correlations, if any?  In this talk, I will present selected current attempts to address the above fundamental questions from the perspective of philosophy and neuroscience, respectively, with the aim of highlighting fruitful interdisciplinary research directions for further investigation.
Bio
Nevia Dolcini is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Primary Faculty of the Center of Cognition and Brain Sciences at the University of Macau. Her primary research interests lie at the intersection of philosophy of language, philosophy of psychology, epistemology, and cognitive sciences. In her works, she addresses topics broadly related to language, perception, and imagination, including irrational beliefs, self-deception, indexicals, and fictional discourse.
